Asking for advice for our trip to Germany and Austria. Hiking centric. Thank you

Hello all,

My wife and I will be traveling to Germany and Austria in June of 2025. We will be doing quite a bit of traveling to visit as much as we can. We enjoy smaller villages in the mountains over big cities. We are avid hikers and will be doing some hiking and Via Ferrata's while there. I have listed our dates and locations below. I would really appreciate any suggestions or recommendations. I'm open minded to changing our itinerary. We will mostly be traveling by train and only renting a car towards the end of the trip. Thank you!!

06/16 - 06/18 - Munich (plan on staying in Old Town area)
take train to Mittenwald
06/18 - 06/22 - Mittenwald (We will be doing several hikes and Via Ferrata's. Will also probably visit castles in Fussen.)
take train to Innsbrook
06/22 - 06/23 - Innsbrook (Just a quick stop in Innsbrook to see the city and have dinner.)
take train to Salzburg, rent car and drive to Hallstatt.
06/23 - 06/25 (Will drive to Hallstatt from Salzburg. Stay in Hallstatt and drive to area Via Ferrata's to hike and climb.)
Drive back to Salzburg
06/25 - 06/27 (Stay in Salzburg and explore the area and maybe do another hike.)
take train back to Munich
06/27 - 06/28 (Last night in Munich before we fly home on 06/28.)

For me, the first 6 days make sense, then it’s a lot of moving around not hiking. The side trip to Innsbruck especially seems like it’s causing you to burn a day of your relatively short vacation in a car. Either extend that time or eliminate Hallstatt???

The area around Berchtesgaden has some great day hikes. We loved the hike up past Wimbachklamm to the alpine hut “restaurant”. Check alltrails for other ideas.

Thank you for the feedback. Maybe we should just skip Innsbrook. We are staying in Hallstatt because there is a via Ferrata we want to do and it’s a short car drive from there.

Some details on the moves you are making are unclear to me. My guesses...

6/22: You leave Mittenwald for Innsbruck for dinner and one night there.
6/23: You leave Innsbruck by train for Salzburg in order to pick up a car, then drive to Hallstatt for 2 nights there.

  • If that's right... it seems to me you could just skip the train ride to Salzburg an rent a car in INNSBRUCK. Return it on the 25th in Salzburg as planned.

  • When you drive to Salzburg it would make sense to stop at Hohenwerfen Castle (and falconry show) in Werfen. A stop there will IMHO be more rewarding - and far simpler - than your idea of doing a long train + bus outing from Mittenwald to Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau (the royal palaces associated with King Ludwig II of Bavaria that lie just outside Füssen, often mislabeled in English as castles.)

  • You have 4 nights in Mittenwald and just 2 in Salzburg. I would split the time 3/3, probably, which makes even more sense if you will be dropping the palaces in Füssen and if you will be doing another hike near Salzburg. The Koenigssee, Berchtesgaden, and the Jennerbahn cable-car lift make for a good day's outing from Salzburg as well.

From Salzburg to Berchtesgaden38km from Salzburg 1hr

Here to Gasthof Auzinger near Ramsau

With the "Almerlebnis Bus" from Gasthof Auzinger to the Bindalm/Hirschbichl and walk back down to Nationalpark House

https://www.almerlebnisbus.com/fahrplan/

or go up with the bus and start hiking from Hirschbichl to higher elevation(Litzlalm for ex) and go back down with the bus to the carpark near Nationalpark House near Gasthof Auzinger

Only bus allowed to go from Gasthof Auzinger to Hirschbichl no private cars

Great Experience

Thank you for your advice. You make a good point about renting the car in Innsbruck verses Salzburg. I just wasn't sure about dropping it off at a different location. First time renting overseas. We normally just take the train. I had 4 nights in Mittenwald due to the hikes in the area, but I could certainly do 3 and 3. Thank you. I will look at that.

As long as you’re dropping the car off in the same country, you’re good.
