I will be arriving Frankfurt on Ascension Day, May 5 to travel by train. Is this a major holiday like the US Memorial Day where everything is closed and everyone makes a long weekend. Can I expect crowded conditions in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria? Or is it like the US Veterans day where only federal services are closed? Also, how long do I need to be at Frankfurt Airport before an international flight? Is two hours enough time? Thanks!!!
If it's a holiday in Hessen (different federal states celebrate different holidays), that means that businesses like banks, insurance agencies, grocery stores, etc. will be closed, but hotels, restaurants and most tourist-related businesses remain open. Public transportation will run on a reduced schedule, which simply means that fewer trains and buses will run during rush hour.
