Appreciate feedback on our itinerary

Can anyone tell me if they think this itinerary is doable. Flying into Frankfurt (early am) picking up car and driving to Bacharach. Two nights in Bacharach with Rhine cruise, Burg Elze.
Drive to Rothenburg de Tauber, one night
Drive to Stuttgart, tour Benz , drive to Baden Baden or vicinity, one night
Drive to Staffen via extended Black Forest drive, one night
Drive to somewhere in Bavaria/Oberammergau,Fussen?.....2 nights
Drive to Salzburg, 2 nights
Now we have 2 or 3 nights in Munich. Can adjust to only 2 nights in Munich and increase 1 night somewhere else, last night in Munich as we fly home on a mid morning flight. We would like to drop car off in Munich on arrival or before we get into the city. All suggestions welcome

Rothenburg obT is way out of your way and not worth the detour from your otherwise circular route. Too many stops for so short a trip - you lose so much time just getting from one place to another.

We just had a fun time in Garmisch-Partenkirken as a Bavarian Alps stop even though it was drizzling most of the time. Berchsgarten NP is an easy day trip from Salzburg with great scenery, especially around the Konigsee.

If you don't want to have to drop a car off at Munich airport, which is something of a pain in its own right because it's on the fringes of things, get directions beforehand on how to get to the offsite drop off parking ramp that's where you actually return a car if you're on paper returning it to the train station.

But it is very easy to drop the car off at the airport if driving from Salzburg...Then catch Sbahn 1 or 8 to the stop closest to your Munich hotel, or change to the appropriate Ubahn if that will get you closer. Sometimes it is a pain to drive in Munich unless you have GPS or are well acquainted with the streets. If you have time to stop for a couple of hours at Schloss Herrenchiemsee (Prien)on the way back to Munich from Salzburg you will not be disappointed...

This is a fairly ambitious itinerary and will take a lot of energy. Suggest substituting Gengenbach for Baden-Baden , especially if you skip Rothenburg. There is more to do in Garmisch than Obergmmergau. It would be nice to relax in Fussen or Mittenwald and catch your breath before your final push to Salzburg and Munich.

Have a great trip!!!

Agree with the others, Rothenburg odT is out of your way, and there's plenty of good substitutes directly along your route or nearby (Tübbingen, Esslingen and Schwäbische Hall near Stuttgart, to name a few). If you drop Rothenburg, I would head to the Black Forest region after the Mittelrhein, then go to Stuttgart.

And yes, Oberammergau is a little small for a two night stay.

I disagree with the posters who say Oberammergau is too small for a two night stay. We have stayed two nights or more on several occasions and always hate to leave. It really depends on what you are looking for. If you want lots of activity and bustle, yes, it is too small. On the other hand, if you want quaint charm, quiet streets to wander and access to countryside for evening walks, it is perfect ... and there are just enough restaurants and hotels to give you a choice without leaving you overwhelmed. That being said, we plan to stay in Mittenwald on our next visit for a bit of change of scenery.

I agree with the other posters about dropping Rothenburg. We enjoyed our visit there but it isn't worth the detour. I promise you will find equally charming towns along your route. Why don't you slow down a bit and spend that extra night in the Black Forest or Oberammergau area, instead? You won't regret it.

If you have GPS, dropping the car off at Munich's main train station (Hauptbahnhof) is pretty straight forward. We've done it twice with no problems.

Looks like you have some good advice, especially the note to relax(!) somewhere along this trip.
