apartment vs hotel in Munich

We will be spending 2 nights in Munich in early December and are looking into the option of staying at an aparment rather than a hotel. We have used the vacation rental by owner (VRBO) type websites for various stays in the US. I was curious if anyone has experience with this in Germany and if so, any recommendations for Munich?

This is just my personal opinion but for just 2 nights I don't see the advantage of an apartment. I'd just get a hotel. I've rented apartments for almost all of my stays of 4 nights or more all over Europe but less than 4 nights I use hotels.

And Munich hotels provide SUBSTANTIAL breakfast -- unlike Italian or French roll-and-coffee. For 2 nights I would stick with hotel.

Why bother with the hassle of renting an apartment for just two nights (if that is even possible), when a hotel is much more convenient and will give you a very good breakfast.
Try the Europaeischer Hof, Le Meridien, Eden Wolff, Hotel Uhland--all very good.

Thanks everyone. I'm on team hotel, but my husband is on team apartment. So, I thought I would get some other opinions. When we were in Germany in 2012, we tended to grab breakfast at a bakery or the train station as we were headed out for the day. So, he thinks we should do the apartment on the basis that he doesn't think we'll eat at the hotel. I agree that it seems like more of a hassle than walking up to a counter, checking in, and then handed a key. Gotta pick the battles though!

The best breakfast in center-city Munich hotels, hands down, is the Platzl Hotel, 2 blocks from the Marienplatz Christkindlmarkt.

Try Park inn by Radisson in Munich. If you want an apartment feel, there are some rooms with kitchenette PLUS a wonderful free breakfast.

Most places want at least 3 nights, and we only stayed 2 nights, so this was the compromise.

You did not mention price. There are some discount hotel chains at which breakfast and its costs are optional: Ibis and Motel One. We have stayed at both and been satisfied; but, they are basic. We took breakfast at both and it was fine. You can opt to skip the breakfast and grab a roll at the train station or ... if you prefer. Gary

I have rented an apartment for as few as two nights, but only because we wanted to be able to do some laundry. In your scenario, I'd go with the hotel. An exception would be if you were traveling with more than 3 people. In that case an apartment might cost less.

Thanks everyone for your input. I appreciate it. Gary Mc, the Ibis and Motor One options look to be in the range of what we want. A couple of the suggested hotels are near the Hbf and I've read conflicting reviews on hotels in the Hbf that it's either 'seedy' or it's in a 'great location.' Any thoughts? My husband has seen the comments about the 'seedy' location, so he wants to avoid it. When we were there in 2012, we booked the room through hotwire. While we got a great rate on a Marriott hotel, it was a good 15-20 minutes to get to the Hbf. So, this time we are focused more on location and want to be near the Marienplatz. Or, at least closer by train than we were previously. I'd like to be able to convince him that a room near the Hbf would be perfectly fine as well. Thanks again for your help!

I just stayed in Munich 2 weeks ago at the Hotel Am Markt and it was very convenient. Right at the Viktualienmarkt, about 2 blocks from the Marienplatz and the entrance to the metro, 3 stops to the Hbf. I used it because it was so central and yet easy to get to the Hbf for my day trips by train. It's a very nice hotel and they do offer breakfast but it's extra so you don't have to get it. I didn't want the included breakfast because I do like you - stop and pick up a croissant and go. Very nice hotel at reasonable prices.

I am a single woman over 80 years old and I always stay at hotels near the Hbf in Munich, e.g. Eden Wolff, LeMeridien, Europaeischer Hof, Fleming. I have never felt uncomfortable in the area. It is definitely not "seedy."
I think that impression comes largely from people who live in small towns in the U.S. and are simply unaccustomed to what cities are like.
Don't let the apprehensions of others keep you from making the plans you want.

If you want to get a feel for what the area is like around some of the hotels near the train station, plug their addresses into Google maps and then click on street view. You can then "walk" around each area.

The area immediately around the main train station is a little seedy but not dangerous. We generally stay near Sendlinger Tor but have walked by the train station at various times. I would not worry about it.

Joan has it right. Where the Fleming Restaurant or Le Meridien (such a nice hotel) and Europäischer Hof are located to the right of and across from München Hbf is not a seedy area. Exactly the same area I stay at ...the Bahnhofsvorplatz in Munich.

"Don't let the apprehensions of others keep you from making the plans you want." How true.

Thanks everyone for all of your tips and advice. Looks like I won the battle. We opted for the Motel One Sendlinger Tor. The location looks great and it was a little cheaper than the apartment he was considering. Although, I was warming up to the idea of having a washing machine available!
