Anyone here ever purchased medical travel insurance?

My wife and I will be in Germany and the UK from September 8 to the 27.
We are 64 and 66 years old, so basically seniors. At 66 my wife is on Medicare, without medical ins. when out of the US. I am still on Molina Health Insurance. I looked up Allianz Travel Insurance for two travelers and for those dates the quote came back as follows:
Emergency medical coverage: $50,000
Emergency Transportation: $250,000
Baggage Loss: $2,000
Baggage Delay: $750
Travel Delay: $1,000
Travel Accident: $10,000
each amount is labeled 'per insured'.

Total amount for Allianz insurance is $97 per traveler, or $194 total for two travelers.

Anyone have any comments or suggestions. I'm not an expert on any type of insurance, although been paying for auto and home insurance for years. But seems like travel insurance is a good investment, especially when one of us is not covered-Medicare.

If you buy travel insurance, you are shopping based on three criteria:

  1. What is the coverage and how does it meet your needs?
  2. What is the premium?
  3. What will your experience be if you need to make a claim?

You need to research all these things. There are a number of good, independent websites where you can do a comparison among different companies that offer travel insurance. A low premium is good, but not if they are really horrible to work with when you file a claim or if they don't provide the coverage you need.

Check https://www.squaremouth.com/ and https://www.insuremytrip.com/. These are two good sites that offer independent reviews and comparisons of different companies and policies.

No experience with Allianz, but have had medical problems arise when out of the country and was glad we had it. Another thing to consider is evacuation coverage. Most travel / medical policies have some, but often it will only evacuate you to the nearest facility that can treat you. A company named MedJet Assist will bring you home if you are hospitalized. They have annual plans and per trip plans. Google them and see what you think.

I paid $50 for 10 days and not as much coverage amounts and I am older than you, so I think you are in the ball park.

treat you.

I have purchased over a hundred different evacuation policies over the years from various companies that offer this and have never come across a policy that didn't cover evacuation back home for recuperation or further treatment. The "nearest medical facility" clause that appears in all these policies simply refers to the initial incident. For example if you were to twist your ankle it prevents you from calling the insurance company and demanding to the be flown home the next day to be seen by your primary doctor in the US.
If the medical problem is serious and you need further treatment/recuperation closer to home, that is covered by different clauses further down in the policy.
I've come across some inferior policies that limit evacuation costs to the price economy ticket, but most will cover the six figures for a serious incident that a doctor and the insurance policy deem medically necessary.
Always read the fine print of the policy.

We have purchased many medical insurance travel plans. We have had three large claims paid in full within a month; all were with Travel Guard. We have had premiums in the thousands and claims paid as high as $15,000 to 20,000. We always have a medical evacuation policy, flying us home to our hospital of choice. A friend did not have it and paid $700,000 for a medical flight to the US from Spain.

Thanks for these replies, I will delve further into this, and update this post. I got Allianz out of Europe Through the Back Door book. Rick lists several other companies as well, I'll look that those companies too.

I also have an Allianz annual policy and a Medjet annual policy. Fortunately I have not had to use either. But it’s peace of mind if I ever needed them.

Absolutely! The devil is always in the details, and vary from company to company.

I've purchased insurance through that company many times as a part of package deals and through our airline for our last European trip and our upcoming trip. Fortunately, never had to use any of it myself but it was very good when my sister had a medical problem at home the day before we were to leave for a beach trip in Cancun. She was ok but unable to travel so had to cancel. She was fully reimbursed for her cost and I was still able to use my part of the all-inclusive package without additional cost. The cost you list is around or a bit less than I've paid so I think you're getting a good deal.

The coverage limits Allianz provided look pretty much like what I've seen on my policies over the years. That $194 looks like a very good premium for two people, especially your age, and the $250,000 "emergency transportation" looks like what's usually called "medical evacuation" -- certainly more than just a local ambulance ride. What the quote notably doesn't cover is trip cancellation, but you apparently aren't looking for that.

The websites Lane provided are useful to comparison shop and also to learn more about this complex subject. I hope you find a good plan that you don't have to use!

I really appreciate all the help here. I'm leaning towards the Allianz after looking at two other companies. Seems to be right around the ballpark for quote and coverage. We have separate cancelation insurance, plus we've booked the flight and hotels with the option to cancel within 24 hours. A little more money to do this, but oh well.

OP. You are going on your trip for 21 days. $97 divided by 21 = $4.61 pp per day. Less than a beer.
We have an annual Allianz policy and will renew. Used Allianz in the past and it worked well. Any of the majors will be fine I expect. And mostly you don’t know anything about actual results unless you end up needing it.

treemoss2, where I live a local beer is about $1.25 for a half litre can retail, and usually twice that in a bar.

I have an expat medical policy with Allianz. I have used it several times. They pay direct to the provider and the provider has never complained. I would presume that they are as good with a short term policy. I choose them for the coverage and for the price but I also choose them because when I had a question a real person called me. We had a number of conversations and exchanged a few emails before and after I signed up. In other words, good service.

I also have a medjet evacuation policy. While I dont remember all of the details now, and dont want to go through the research, if you choose someone other than MedJet, do make sure you understand the circumstances under which you can use them and to where you will go. There are differences in the policies by other companies.

Horsewoofie, we do exactly the same thing with Medjet and Allianz. Policies for individual trips started to become much too expensive at our age.
