Anyone have experience with these two hotels in Munich?

HI everyone,

Does anyone have experience with the Schiller5 hotel and the 25 Hours Royal Bavarian Munich. I fully appreciate they are not far from each other but having a hard time choosing between the two based on the reviews. Every time I feel like I've decided, I read something that sways me the other way!

Thank you everyone!

I didn't stay in either of the two hotels. But although the two hotels are close to each other, I would prefer the 25 hours in terms of location.
The 25 hours is in a historic building directly opposite the main train station. Well, the main station is a huge construction site right now, but right next to the hotel is an escalator to the mezzanine of the main station and Schuetzen-street leads directly to Karlsplatz and the pedestrian zones in the city center.
Schiller5 is in Schiller-Strasse which is a bit shabby and the building next door and the building on the other side of the street are currently under construction.

I have been to the restaurant (Neni) and the bar of the 25 hours hotel, both are very stylish and the food at Neni was really good. But you could also go there if you stay at Schiller5.

Don't worry too much. Neither hotel is bad and the impact of this decision on your trip will be minimal.

I would avoid the whole area. Not only the construction site mentioned is a problem, but also the Schützenstraße mentioned. Due to the closure of the former department store there, this area is and is becoming more and more a place where you don't even want to walk through anymore. Unfortunately, I no longer think it is particularly safe.
I have to say it that way, even though I still love 'my' Munich more than any other city.

First of all, the very large construction site at the main station (Hauptbahnhof) is of course very disruptive. Munich is getting a new main station and the S-Bahn there is getting more tracks.

Then there was a large department store at the Hauptbahnhof (between Stachus and Hauptbahnhof). This was bought by a real estate speculator who is now bankrupt. The large building complex is empty. The department store directly at Stachus, bought by the same real estate speculator, is also empty.

You also have to know that drug consumption on the street is actually illegal in most of Germany. In Bavaria (for political reasons) there are no so-called Druckräume (safe spaces) for drug addicts. They had to do their business in the cellar of the Hauptbahnhof (where nobody else ever went) . Due to the construction of the new main station, the cellar can no longer be used.

In the meantime, you can find many drug addicts and homeless people (this also happens in Germany and especially in the very expensive big cities) in and around these empty buildings.

And now to your question. I wouldn't classify the area as being very safe .... at least until the issue of the empty buildings is resolved. I don’t think you’ll be attacked and threatened, but still it can get uncomfortable.

And apart from the safety, it is also a place that is currently just such that people do not like to spend that much time there anymore.

Munich is a rich city (compared to Berlin, for example) and we Munich residents are not used to things not being clean and nice. I may be exaggerating a little, but there is a grain of truth in it. It is all the worse for us that there is now such a large and painful 'eyesore' in the middle of our beloved city.

I agree with everything Mignon has said. I suggest you look for a place up around the two art museums and the university. If you are close to an underground (U Bahn) it's very easy to get into the old part of the city, and I like that part of town. The alternate would be to go south of the river, but while that's also a nice neighborhood I prefer to walk along the English Garden in the evenings.

Rather than being near the main train station you may wish to look for hotels near Marienplatz which is a lovely area and also near S Bahn stops. We liked Hotel Torbrau, but there are many other hotels in that area which may be less expensive. Look at Trip Advisor or Booking.com or Hotels.com and you may find something that you like better than your original choices.

I stayed at a hotel near the Munich HBF last September for two nights. I will agree that all the construction at the station makes that area look pretty unattractive, though I never felt unsafe. I've visited Munich a couple of times and stayed closer to Marienplatz, so seeing this part of Munich was a little bit of a surprise. I can second the recommendation, above, for the Hotel Torbrau.

I agree with the previous posts - I found the area near the train station not to be comfortable. I stayed at Hotel Torbau as well - it was across the street from a subway station and at one of the old city gates. It was very walkable to all the sites, restaurants, grocery stores, shopping, and an easy hop onto the subway.

Hi all- just to close the loop on my original post. We stayed at the 25hours hotel. The location is fantastic if you are going to be using the trains for day trips etc. Yes, the area is under construction and is not pretty. Glad we picked the 25 hours as the other hotel was more in a construction zone. While not a pretty part of town, we felt completely safe and the walk to marienplatz was 10 minutes. Wr never had any issues (2 girls..:evening late at night). It would have been great if we could have stayed in the old centre but they were either sold out or extremely expensive during Xmas markets.

Like I said, the convenience of having the train station and all the underground shops across the street was great.

Hope that helps.

25hours is new to me. Any idea what the 25hours refers to?
