Anyone ever traveled from Freiburg to Zurich?

My wife and I have plans to travel from Freiburg to Zurich by train. Then flying from Zurich to UK. But my question is regarding the travel. Train from Freiburg to Zurich of course, but we are doing an overnight in Zurich to catch the airline out of Zurich the following morning. Any recommendations for hotels near the airport? I am going through them now, but thought I'd check here as well.

Which Freiburg? The one in Switzerland or the one in Germany?

Be helpful to know what time the flight is.

Badger presents an interesting question, so I did a search for "Freiburg Switzerland" and the results come up as "Fribourg Switzerland. "

OP's other posts seem to focus on Germany, so maybe OP is making the long trek to Zurich for a flight?

Sorry, should have been more specific, Freiburg(Breisgau) Hbf-Black Forest visit; and then we will be leaving Freiburg morning of September 23 and overnight in Zurich, flying out to UK on the 24th. Mainly wanted to find out any experience folks had or recommendation of hotels near the Zurich airport. I havent book a flight yet out of Zurick to UK-London which will be the LHR airport.

Thanks Sam, interesting but I don't think that would pass with my wife...

Do you have a special reason for stopping in Zürich? If not, have you considered spending the night in Paris instead? That would be my first choice.

Yuck.. I'd fly out of Zurich any day of the week rather than Paris.

You could also fly out of Basel, which is technically Freiburg's airport (Basel-Mullhouse-Freiburg Euro Airport). Basel is an Easyjet hub, so should be plenty of flights to London.

You don't need to fly if going via Paris, you arrive at Gare de l'Est and leave from Gare du Nord.

Yes, you can even get to London in a day with either the 7:06 TGV direct to Paris Est and connect to the Eurostar at Nord, or the 16:57 direct TGV to Est and the Eurostar if ou don't mind getting into London just before midnight.

I appreciate the suggestion about Paris. Our trip is to Germany, but the UK is visiting personal friends. Looking into getting one of the budget airlines for a quick trip to London. No actual reason to fly out of Zurich, except I'm finding it cheaper then the other airports around the Black Forest area...plus kinda wanted to see the countryside around the border of Germany/Switzerland border to Zurich even though via train.

If you want to see the countryside, specify stopovers (with 0 time) at Donaueschingen and Schaffhausen. Then you will go by a more scenic route taking 4 hours and 3 train changes at Donaueschingen, Singen, and Zurich HB.

In Zürich also consider booking a hotel in down town, near the main train station. Getting to the airport from the city centre by train is easy and reliable, and you have a bigger choice of hotels, and probably get to spend more time in the city.

If you do decide to stay near the airport, book your train ticket Freiburg(Breisgau) through to the Airport.

The Canton of Freiburg has two "official" languages, French and German (one of three such cantons, along with Bern/Berne and Wallis/Valais), so both Fribourg (FR) and Freiburg (DE) are acceptable spellings. Only the Canton of Graubünden is tri-lingual. All other Cantons have one "administrative" language.

I went from Offenburg through Freiburg (Breisgau) to Zürich in 1989 and stayed in town in Zürich before flying out to the US. There are some reasonably priced (I think, at least for Zürich) Hotels just across the bridge from the HB. I had dinner in the University district and time in the morning to stroll down the Limmat to the lake.

The next day, there is a 10 minute S-Bahn (S2) from the HB to the airport every half hour (XX:14 & XX:44).

And you can also take mainline trains to the airport from Zurich HB for the same price. Net is that there is a train to the airport about every 10 to 15 minutes.

Thanks all for the replies, I might look downtown too, for a chance to walk around.
Right now, I have two hotels near the Airport that may work, one is Apart Hotel Zurich Airport, and ibis Hotel Zurich Airport. For one double bed room its $164 and $170, using the hotel website to get prices. There are a couple others at that price too, but majority of the hotels around Zurich are more than $300 a night! Can't believe it!!!
But I gonna check out the downtown hotels too...

It was 2006, but we stayed at the Mövenpick Hotel Zurich Airport. It was no bargain, but what's a bargain in Switzerland? I remember that it was just steps to some kind of S-Bahn (maybe not the actual category of service) behind the hotel. I actually went Freiburg-Zurich by car, with some nice stops, like the Vitra Design Museum, the Fondation Beyeler modern art museum and the Roman site Augusta Raurica. But the car was rented at the Zurich airport, so there was no drop-off charge.

Do you all know about the little cubicles in Zurich that you can book overnight, just big enough for one person? It's 66 bucks US.
Then there's the Widder Hotel downtown Zurich for $2, 142 a night! My favorite!!!!!!!!!

I finally settled on Dormero Hotel Zurich Airport at $136 US per night
Not bad price I guess
Thanks for all the suggestions and help

The location is not too convenient but the price is certainly right. 1/5 mile from Opfikon station (4 minute walk). You do have to pay for the bus in the morning to the airport, but that is pretty minor. Looks like a really nice place.

Yeh thanks Sam, looks like the bus fare comes out to around 5 bucks US for the ride from the hotel to airport. This trip is actually one month long, we are spending the time, one week, in my favorite place, Berchtesgaden and then visiting friends not only in Germany but the UK, a couple days at Fussen with the castles, and then some time in the Black Forest. With all the train and bus transportation we are doing, I thought it may be a good idea to add another overnight in the Black Forest area in case of delays. I found Zurich to actually be cheaper to fly out of then the towns nearer to the Black Forest, so chose Zurich to fly to UK.
