UPDATE: Any tips for flying to US from Munich 10/15/26?

UPDATE: Many thanks to the people who quickly responded to my question. I’m at the airport, coffee in hand, so it all worked out, and without stress thanks to your collective advice! I took the RE5 from Salzburg to Munich Ostbahnhof, and the S1 to Neufahrn, where they announced in German and English there was a bus waiting for us. The S1 wasn’t crowded, so I assumed the bus wouldn’t be either. The bus pulled away just a couple of minutes after we boarded. 22 minutes later, we’re at the airport. Unfortunately, I had been developing a cold all day, so didn’t venture out to Freising after checking into the airport Hilton. I will save those recommendations for next time.

Security was quick at 6am, so here I sit, happily twiddling my thumbs, and grateful for the people on this forum who made this last bit of my trip carefree!

+++++
I haven’t made this trip for years and would welcome advice from anyone who can make the homeward bound trip a little easier.

Flying Delta from MUC, 9am departure Thursday 10/15. Staying the night before at the airport Hilton. Coming from Salzburg 10/14, and I see on the MUC website trains aren’t running to the airport (bus replacement service?).

Carry on only, and flying premium select (boarding group 2, if that makes any difference to the advice).

Questions:
1) how straightforward is the bus replacement and how much extra time to build in to get from Salzburg to MUC?

2) what time would you recommend being in the airport for a 9am departure (I assume boarding starts an hour ahead if that), especially to keep stress low?

3) any guidance/advice on how security works (vs the TSA norms I’m used to)?

4) anything else I didn’t know to ask?

Thank you!

There is a regular Lufthansa shuttle that runs between the Hauptbahnhof and airport:

Airport Shuttle Bus

If you are taking the train from Salzburg to the Ostbahnhof instead, then you'll need to
use the workaround bus as described on the airport website. Since it doesn't start
until tomorrow morning, I am not sure if anyone can tell you how it works or how
straightforward it is or isn't.

Everyone tells you to be at the airport 3 hours before your flight for a transatlantic
departure. You haven't specified if you are in business class (easier and faster),
have bags to check (longer) or carryon (shorter), have status (faster through security),
or have Easypass (faster, you can use the E-gates to get through exit immigration).
If you have all of the above, I'd say you could walk over from the Hilton 2 hours
before your flight.

If you take the train all the way into the Hauptbahnhof, the airport shuttle bus stop is
on the north side of the station (most likely a left turn after you exit the train platform).
Take the bus to the last stop at Terminal 2 and you will be almost right next to the Hilton.

I would be there at 6. ( especially if there are bag to check). I would rather have thumb twiddling time at the gate than be standing in a line and hoping it moves fast enough so I get to the plane on time.

Thank you shoeflyer and Joe32f! I edited the original post to add carry on only and flying premium select.

Looks like the most straightforward is to go to the Hauptbahnhof and use the Lufthansa shuttle. I’ll be in the airport no later than 6am on flight day — twiddling my thumbs is no problem, but missing the flight is!

Thanks again for the quick replies!

I still have a couple of days in Salzburg — hope to have a trip report out after I get home.

The Lufthansa bus will be full; if you decide to take it, you should book in advance (https://www.airportbus-muenchen.de/de). The replacement buses for the S-Bahn will also be full, and at least the one for the S8 is pretty slow. Alternatively, you could take an RE from the Hbf to Freising and then take the bus to the airport from there. Unlike when using the LH bus, you can book a through ticket for this connection (specify “via Freising”) or you travel with the Bayernticket. E.g. Salzburg dep. 17:05 Munich arr. 19:09, change to RE3 dep. 19:24 (destination: Plattling), Freising arr. 19:48, change to Bus 635 dep.19:57, MUC arr. 20:14.

We recently flew Delta (Premium Select) out of Munich and stayed at the Hilton the night before. We were at the airport at 7:30 for a 10:30 flight with bags to check. All the counters were open and it took very little time to get through checking luggage and getting through security, so we were definitely twiddling our thumbs. Our “TSA” location had the new scanners, so we did not have to take liquids out (up to an entire liter). But then they did check my little bottle of traditional balsamic. If you only have carry on bags, you’ll have no problem.

Departing from MUC, we stay the night before at Hotel Maisberger in Neufahrn. It's 50 yards from station. We have a nice last dinner there, and early morning take the S1 or S8 two stops to the terminal. We'll do that next week.

Hi geovagriffith, yes, that is the usual way, but the trains are not running to or from the airport this week due to construction. I will report back after I make it to the hotel with my successful (I hope!) rerouting! 😁

you could take an RE from the Hbf to Freising and then take the bus to the airport from there.

I don't know that I would want to go anywhere near the Hbf with the construction going on at this time. However, if you get off at Ostbahnhof (last stop before the Hbf), you could take the S8 as far as Ismaning, then take the bus from there to the airport. I think the bus leaves every 20 minutes.

Alternatively, you could get on the S1 at Ost and take it to either Neufahrn or Freising and take a bus from there. The S1 runs every 20 minutes from Ost. The S1 replacement bus(es) from Neufahrn to the airport meets each S1. Alternatively, stay on the S1 to Freising. There's a replacement bus meeting every S1 at Freising and going to the airport. That bus runs every 20 minutes. Or there is the regular bus, 635, that runs every 10 minutes from the Freising Bahnhof to the airport. So there are buses from Freising nine times an hour, three times as many as Neufahrn or Ismaning, in case their are crowds.

The regional train from Salzburg to Ostbahnhof should take less than two hours, plus another hour or so to the airport. You should get there plenty early. I would recommend that, after you check in, take the bus (635) back to Freising Bahnhof and change to bus 725 (direction Dachau) and get off at the Weihenstephan (pronounced Vī-en-shte-fawn¹) bus stop and walk up the hill to the brewery (the oldest still existing brewery in the world) and have dinner at the outdoor Biergarten (Bräustüberl). It looks like this month the menu at the Biergarten features duck.

The bus fare to Weihenstephan should be 2,70€, including the transfer at Freising Bhf. Tell the driver you want to go to Weihenstephan, so the ticket will reflect the change of buses at the Bahnhof. If you tell the second driver "Weihenstephan", he should indicate the bus stop where you get off.

Another place where I've eaten in Freising is the Park Café. It's closer, right in Freising, a short walk from the Bahnhof (one bus). To get there you walk about 300 yds up Bahnhofstraße, cross the bridge over the Moosach, then turn left and walk along the creek trail another 120 yds. It has outdoor, creekside dining.

  1. Remember, in German, W is pronounce like our V, ei is pronounce like a long i, and st is pronounced sht.

I agree with the Weihenstephan Braueri, and the Braustube. We ate inside last time. As a beer geek, I had bought a spot on a brewery tour as well. It was well worth it for me. And I had to "buy the t-shirt". We're leaving Munich next week, might even go to Friesing again, from Neufahrn.

how straightforward is the bus replacement and how much extra time to build in to get from Salzburg to MUC?

In 11 trips to Europe in this century, I've often encountered SEV (Schienen Ersatz Verkehr = Rail replacement transit), at least four times in Germany ("specific cases" I can remember off hand today, probably more) plus one time in Czechia. It's no big deal. Most Bahnhöfe have bus terminals. One bus stop will be plainly marked for SEV. It will probably take a little longer, but not much. The time shown on the Bahn website, when it shows the SEV, accounts for the bus and is probably pretty accurate.

I've also made a lot of trips on buses when the small town I was going to didn't have train service, or at least not from where I was coming. Examples: Reit im Winkl, Dinkelsbühl, Beilstein. Buses are fine, but don't usually run on routes serviced by trains. If both, I prefer a train.
