Antique Shopping and Flea Market Shopping in Berlin

I am a bit of a spy and military history buff as well as a photography nerd. I recall reading about a massive antique/flea market in Berlin and I was wondering is it possible to find things like military surplus in terms of patches and insignia, older model cameras, and possibly some KGB items at places like that or if there are some shops that might be selling items like that? This might also be a touchy question but is it possible to bring back items like firearm magazines as a gift for a friend or possibly a Russian or East German AK bayonet? I would think those might be a no go but it was a request and said I would find out or should I contact one of the government agencies in the US or in Germany?

You should certainly reconfirm airline, airport security, and customs regulations about transporting weapons.

As far as the magazine is concerned, I would assume that that's not an issue unless it contains illegal information or content.

But then, I don't really see any point in importing firearm magazines into a country with such a strong pro-firearm lobby as the NRA. Why would firearm magazines be something you need to import?

@Anna its not a publication but a firearms part since he has an East German designed and built rifle I thought it might be cool to have a matching magazine or two. I doubt there would be an issue since its not an actual firearm and I don't want to deal with the headache of purchasing a live firearm since it was a pain to find all the paperwork required for submission, not even knowing if I found the right forms, as well as the time it would take for approval and I would have to find a licenced dealer for my area who can accept an international shipment as far as I know and I don't my local store does that. I'm just going to tell him if its a huge pain and I can't ship it back to my own address he's going have to look online.

I haven't shopped in the area but Rick's new Berlin guidebook (pages 292-5) lists several regular flea markets around the city, with the Sunday market by Ostbahnhof mentioned for Communist souvenirs, along with the store VEB Orange (for more kitschy plastic items). One of the largest flea markets is Saturday and Sunday by Tiergarten Park, at Strasse des 17 Juni, and the description mentions "antiques."

An initial Google search turns up "top 10" lists from mostly tourist-related resources, without any attempt by me to get more specific:

@Anna no worries :) I think he might have to settle for his alternative thing was kirschwasser and I doubt I would have an issue bringing back.

@Laura thank you very much for that info I am definitely going to look at those links and plan accordingly since it would be fun to just explore.

Well, you may want to check customs regulations if there are any restrictions on the amount of alcohol you may import. ;-)

And make sure you wrap that stuff well. A bottle of red wine did not fare well in my suitcase once... and neither did all the stuff it got spilled on...

On the flea market shopping in Berlin: There is one on Saturdays and Sundays across from Museum Island. One of the display tables (a very long one) has nothing but war history, most of which on WW2., ie, tons of books and pamphlets on battles, unit histories, Division memoirs, naval warfare, tank operations, etc, etc. All of the written material and books are in German. Don't expect to find anything in French or English.

@Anna good point I didn't think about the possible restrictions which could occur but I had no issues bringing back scotch from Scotland so have to see I suppose.

@Fred I will have to take a look. Even if I would have to translate them over they would still be fun reads and interesting souvenirs.

There are no limits on bringing back a reasonable amount of alcohol for personal use (not for resale). You can bring two liters per person without paying tax on it. But if you declare more bottles than that, you still usually won't pay tax because the customs agents don't want to bother with the paperwork.
