We will be in the area over Christmas. I know everything will be shut down for the holidays. I'm wondering if it would be worth our while to take a train ride to Amberg from Nuremburg just to walk around and take in the sites? Has anyone been there before?
Amberg is one of those places American tourists just don't know about. It's definitely worth visiting. They have a nice, smaller, Christmas market, a interesting museum on gliders, and the Stadtbrille, which is a double arched city gate/bridge that's quite unique. Go!
I can also highly recommend Amberg. A very beautiful little town.
We would be visiting on Christmas Day. So you think there is enough things to see walking around town? I know nothing will be open. Thanks!
Yes Amberg is nice for a day trip. It's a walled city and the Vils River runs through it. Nice restaurants, cafes and brewery. Small Weihnachtsmarkt 27. November bis 23. Dezember. Still a little US influence as the last of the American military community left Amberg in 1995. We usually end up in Café Baroco and Bootshaus Amberg. The Stadtbrille is the Wassertorbau and its reflection in the Vils. The view from the Wallfahrtskirche Maria Hilf is nice too.

You might find a restaurant for Christmas Mittagessen 11:30-13:30. Weihnachtsgans... Definitely make reservations. You'll probably find a few cafe open.
Danke for the information!
