Alps from Germany

Hello! I am traveling to Hannover, Germany, and wish to spend a day or two hiking/walking in the Alps/foothills of Alps while I am there in the beginning of June. I would ideally like to travel to a less crowded place. Wherever I go, I will be traveling there by train, and I'd like to be close to Freiburg (since I will be going to the Black Forest next!). Could you give me an idea of where I should go?

Thanks!

You may want to explore the Allgäu. Not close to Freiburg but the closest alpin mountains to it. A bit farther away is the beautiful Montafon in Vorarlberg. Going by train from any point of the Bavarian or Austrain Alps to Freiburg is kind of a challence - its time consuming and implies several transfers. From Oberstdorf you would go along the north shore of Lake Constance to Donaueschingen, from Bludenz you would take a train across Switzerland to Basel and, finally, Freiburg (which, however, is not in the Black Forest).

Thank you for the advice! Is there a town you would recommend besides Freiburg to get to the Black Forest? I am having a hard time planning my trip - I've never been to Europe and don't have much experience planning!

You can find many good tips on this forum by searching for black forest. Since you are bound to public transport, I'd prefere on of the minor towns along the main train lines crossing the black forest. In the north Freudenstadt or Alpirsbach, in the center Hausach or Triberg, more to the south Titisee / Schluchsee (touristy) and Donaueschingen. Look for a hotel that offers the Konus Card for free travel on trains and buses in the Black forest.
