We are planning a multi-city 3+ week car trip through Germany with a family member that has many allergies. We'll have a way to cook at each location but would also like to enjoy a meal out each day. If any of you have experience with restaurants in or near Cochem, Xanten, Triberg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber & Rüdesheim that you or someone you know has found to be helpful in preparing allergy-free dishes, I'd appreciate the recommendation.
Nothing specific, but in general, restaurants in most of the countries I have been, including Germany, are good about indicating allergens on the menu, much better than in the US.
That said, the onus is on you, to be safe, look into multilingual cards that describe the allergies involved. Also be specific, since translation and interpretation varies. For example, many report confusion with indicating "shellfish" as an allergy, it seems to vary as to what exactly that includes, so if that applies, indicate Shellfish, and give examples (ie: Shrimp? Clams and Oysters? Lobster?).
