Airport Transfers in Frankfurt

My son will be flying from Nuremberg to Chicago in August. His flight has a 2 hour layover in Frankfurt. Will he need to go through passport control in Frankfurt or will he only go through passport control in Nuremberg? I would like to be assured that 2 hours would be plenty of time. He will not have checked baggage and will be flying with the same airline.

Should not be a problem. He will go through passport control to get his passport exit stamp in Frankfurt because that is where he is leaving the Schengen Zone. Shouldn't take long, and if there happens to be a big line at the check point and he is running late, he can request to be moved up in the line. For me, its never been more than a 5 minute process.

He should be fine, but he needs to know that he will go through a second security check in Frankfurt before getting to the gate for his flight to Chicago. So, once he is through passport control, he should make his way directly to his next gate, rather than shopping, etc.

In early 2002, I changed planes in Frankfurt coming back to the US from Munich. I had a little over an hour and made it.

I had to change concourses (A to B), and even though I used the tunnel, I went through security three times, including at the gate. (This was just a few month after 911 and security was very tight.)

Following as we will be doing the similar in May. Prague to Frankfurt to Chicago with only an hour layover. It says we are in the same concourse though.

I don't know about other concourses, but if you are using the A/Z concourse, you will arrive on the lower, A, level, which is still inside Schengen. You'll have to go through emigration (outgoing passport control) before proceeding to the upper, Z, level, which is considered outside Schengen. All of this will be inside the secure concourse, so you won't have to go through security.
