Airplane connection from Salzburg to Munich

Any one know the traffic I may encounter as I make my way for a 11:40am departure from Munich airport on a friday morning coming from Salzburg. I'd like to stay in the Salzburg area the night before but am concerned that it would be a stressful morning driving to an airport I've never been too, drop off a car, find the correct gate and not miss my flight.
What do you think? I'm not stuck on staying in Salzburg the night before I just don't want to sacrifice a night by staying in a throw away hotel just for connivence sake. I want to squeeze out as much of my trip as possible.
If your opinion is to find a hotel close to the airport is there one you can recommend

Thanks in advance for your help

You could turn in the car the night before and take the train to MUC the next morning.

There is an IC leaving Salzburg Hbf at 6:43, changing a Munich Ostbahnhof just after 8, and getting to MUC at 8:55, giving you 2h45m, which should be plenty of time. With advance purchase, the fare would be as low as 29€ for one, 49€ for two.

There is an earlier Meridian regional train leaving a half hour earlier, at 6:13, also with a change at Ost, getting to MUC at 8:35. The fare for that connection is about 34€/person.

Driving is only 10-20 minutes faster and then you'd have to take time at the airport checking in the car. The train comes into the S-Bahn station between the terminals at MUC.

You could also stay in Freising, which is about 20 minutes by bus from the airport. I've never stayed at Zur Gred, but it has been recommended by others on this forum. It about ¼ mile from the Bahnhof, from which a bus leaves every 20 minues for the airport. Here is the English language brochure with accommodations in Freising..

A8 between Salzburg and Munich is one of the most beautiful stretches of road along the entire Autobahn network... and because traffic usually crawls, you would have ample time to view it, but making your flight would be very difficult.

Here's what I would do: spend you last night at Germany's best thermal resort, Therme Erding. There's probably a shuttle to the airport, and if not, it's an easy taxi ride.

Hey Jay,

During our last 4 trips to the airport (10/07, 9/09, 12/10 and 12/13) on a Friday, we allowed ourselves 3 hours to get there, twice form Berchtesgaden area and twice from Hall in Tirol. Never hit much traffic, but we left these places around 10am. and arrived around 12:30pm. I know what you mean about "throw away" nights, but I would not consider Erding or Freising "throw away nights". We stayed at the Park Hotel in Erding. Very nice and an easy walk to the nice old town.

Returning a car at Munich airport is very easy and quick. All signage is in both German and English around the airport and all rental cars, regardless of which company you rented from, get returned to the same garage.

Thank you my friends for your input....You really did help me as this was a concern I wasn't certain how to deal with. I'm glad to hear that it isn't going to be a throw away night and will take your advise to stay somewhere close to the munich airport to avoid the traffic crawl and add stress to what I think is going to be a very relaxing vacation... thanks again
