Airberlin to cease all operations 28 October!

+++UPDATE 09 OCT: Air Berlin today announced it will cease all operations effective 28th of October 2017. Flights operated by Niki (HG airline code) are not affected.

04 September 2017: Bankrupt Airberlin today announced that ALL long-haul (i.e. inter-continental) flights to and from Berlin will be cancelled from the 25th of September.

As far as Düsseldorf is concerned all but the long-haul flights from and to Boston and Orlando will be continued into October.

Yesterday (03 September) 60% of Airberlin's intra-European services were cancelled for no further reason other than "operational" ones.

Please do not book nor count on Airberlin any longer. Eurowings offer reliable budget direct long-haul services to Germany, so does Condor.

Update 25 September: Effective 15 October ALL long-haul flights are cancelled as leasing companies want their Airbus 330s back.

I think it's been a while since Air Berlin counted as "reliable."

The airlines picking over Airberlin assets and / or routes are in the main only interested in intra-Europe.

I flew Air Berlin from JFK to Berlin in 2012; it was great to have that nonstop option. Now I can add them to my list of "flights I took to Europe that are no longer available" (JFK to Prague on Czech Air in 2007; JFK to Budapest on Malev Hungarian Air in 2008).

Thanks for the heads-up.

On the Tuesday before their Wednesday announcement last month we almost pushed the button and bought 2 round trip tickets to Munich for late November. I'm so glad we hesitated that day, especially when we saw the bankruptcy announcement the next morning! So sorry this happened. We've flown Air Berlin before and liked their service and connections for us. On the west coast we don't get a lot of good competition.

As of yesterday, 8 October, Airberlin was still flying out SFO, I heard their flight announcement being made.

We flew Air Berlin on Sept 30. It was a wonderful experience. I was concerned after the bankruptcy, etc, but we already had tickets. Sorry this has been such a mess for many.
