Afternoon free in Franksurt after bike/barge trip

Our bike/barge tour ends in Frankfurt not too far from the airport on the Main river. We have a reservation at the airport hilton and fly home the next morning.

I plan to taking the train to the airport to drop off our luggage.

Is there anything you would recommend for a free afternoon? .

The Chagall windows at St. Stephan's Church in Mainz are on my list. Church is open until 6.
If you want to ease your biking muscles before your long flight, one of the day spas (or the public pool) in Wiesbaden.
Both are close enough to ride the S-Bahn from the airport.

For science and some history Darmstadt is an option, reachable directly by bus from / to the airport (flyer).

Mentioned Mainz is a good option as well.

We went to the Thermalbad Aukammtal in Wiesbaden:

It has several pools, indoors and out. There is also an adults-only textile-free area that we didn't visit (because I don't like to go textile-free).
The same outfit operates the Kaiser-Friedrich-Therme, which is in a historic building and is all textile-free.
The Radisson Blu hotel has a spa you can buy a day pass to. It's also textile-free.

Frankfurt is a quick 13 min. ride from the airport, if you get off at the Hauptwache.
What are your interests for sightseeing? Historic, museums, nature? Frankfurt has it all.
Where is your ship docking? I would think in Frankfurt. You could also store your luggage in a locker at the main station (Hauptbahnhof), go sightseeing, have dinner, and then train to the airport and check into your hotel. Saves a lot of time going back and forth.

I have to agree with Ms Jo, there's no need to look outside of Frankfurt. If you do go to the airport and drop your gear you'll still be right at a major train station. You can get anywhere in the city in a very short time. Take a look at what the city has to offer, pick something that appeals to you, and enjoy.

If you decide to go the spa route, use Google Maps to look for therme. Be aware that textile free means no bathing suits can be worn. You can wear a towel in a steamroom or sauna, but of course, not in a pool or hot tub. As noted, some of the larger and more family-oriented therme will have both textile OK areas for families and seperate adult-only textile free areas. Other therme will be textile free and adult only.

Can you recommend travel books that cover Frankfurt well? I see books that cover other German towns, but they skip Frankfurt. We will be in Frankfurt two days after our Rick Steves Adriatic tour.
