4 nights in Munich (Flying into Munich), one night in Salzburg and two nights in Vienna (flying out of Vienna). Feeling a bit overwhelmed about train passes. Planning on using local transport and day trips out of Munich. Can anyone offer some advice on purchasing the most effective/efficient train passes , much appreciated.
A MVV-pass is useful for getting around München. Apart from that, what day trips are you planning? A Bayern ticket can be useful, but single tickets can be a better idea.
This site is really helpful for people new to trains:

It's quite possible you just need tickets, not passes.
Nuremburg or Rothenberg, Neuschwanstein Castle, Bavarian alps
It really depends on what and where you are going. If you're just hanging around Munich for the day, you can use buses and other local transport. Tickets are easy to get. For travel to Salzburg or other day trips, you might want to consider getting the Bayern Ticket, which is a regional day ticket available after 9 am each day. You buy one ticket and then can tack on extra people for 8€ each. Not only does it cover the regional travel between all places in Bavaria (including Salzburg) but it includes public transportation as well.
You can find more information here. https://www.bahn.com/en/offers/regional/regional-day-ticket-for-bavaria
Also, if you get the Bayern ticket, don't bother with first class - it's not worth the extra cost. 2nd class is quite comfortable and cheaper.
