Advice needed for Garmish Partenkirchen

Hi everyone

We are interested in doing a 1 day skiiing lesson for 1 child and 1 adult. As we are from a tropical country, we have no experience in skiing and will have to book ski lessons. We are planning to book the ski lesson from skischule garmish-partenkirchen as it is the nearest ski school near our hotel. My wife will not be skiing but she is accompanying us to the ski school. Can I check the following:
1. Must everyone purchase a ski pass to access the mountain? Only my child and I will be skiing, my wife will be at the cafe.
2. what other activities are available on the ski slopes beside skiing?

Danke !

Depending on where you stay you can either take the bus or walk to the lifts in Garmisch. they have very good instruction available. (I've skied there multiple times.)

Your wife can go to the base of the mountain, but will need a pass to go up the lifts. If you don't know how to ski you'll be staying fairly low until you have some proficiency, which can take days. It is dangerous, not only to you but also to everyone else on the slopes to attempt to ski where you are not capable. Please don't do that.

There are places to sit and eat higher up the mountains that are nice even if you're not skiing. They are popular.

Other activities are sleds, small "bikes" with skies instead of wheels, and a small (think chair cushion size) piece of plastic with a handle that's fun for going downhill on. The last of these can be used up on the Zugspitze (and other mountains) and you don't have to know how to ski to do that.

There's also a pretty good apres ski nightlife in town.

Have fun.

Which ski school and slope? It would be fun for your wife to watch. Beginner hills can sometimes be higher up and you would all require a ticket for up and down. One day of ski school will not be near enough for most normal Alpine slopes. As mentioned that can be dangerous for others and you, and you will spend a lot of time falling down. We are older and our skiing days are behind us, but we enjoy winter and the atmosphere and people watching at an Alm. Easy to spend euro 50 per person up and down. For us it is worth it. I like the food at the Ski Alm and will drink a beer or two. There are some vegetarian menus and many non alcoholic beverage choices. You can probably find the ticket price and menus online. Some places have playground areas for kids in the snow. Not far from Garmish is the Ehrwalder Alm in Austria as an alternative, but you would have to get there by bus from Garmish. Have fun. https://www.almbahn.at/en/winter/ski-area/fun-for-everyone/

Hello KGC and mchpp,

Thank you so much for the tips and advices. We are still deciding on what we want to do in Garmish. Our main objective of visiting Garmish is to experience some snow activities there.

We will be driving down to Garmish from Fussen through via Austria and stay in Garmish for 2 nights. May I know are there any places we can consider visiting along our drive to Garmish?

Danke !

Be mindful of snow and ice when winter driving, especially if you have never driven in snow. Take your time. If you get too far off a main road or encounter a steep incline you might need or be required to use snow chains. I have them, but have not used or needed them in 20 years. I expect your rental will come with the required winter tires. You might consider renting an all-wheel drive car. Have an ice scraper and snow brush too.
