we will be in southern and western germany for the month of september, and i'd like a list of active monasteries, where there is a community of monks, and whether lay people are invited to their eucharistic services. danke, nick barthel

You can search for active monasteries on the web site of the Deutsche Ordenskonferenz for different regions and / or dioeceses. Most of the orders have their own web site, e.g. the Benedictines. Access to eucharistic services is generally unrestricted (with the exeception of some orders of strict observance). However, If you want to participate in the life of the community you should email the respective abbey in advance. I know of some Benedictine monasteries in Bavaria (complete link list here) where a temporarely participation in the everydays life of the communities is offered. Those include Sankt Ottilien, Niederaltaich, Metten, Münsterschwarzach, Ettal, Andechs, Plankstetten, Rohr, Scheyern, Schweikelberg, Schäftlarn, and Ottobeuren.

You could try this abbey, though I am not sure if it is just for women or not, as this is an order of nuns. They have rooms to rent that include meals (63€) and the offer to join their church services, etc.
This is near Frankfurt.
