Accommodations within Germany

I've got my itinerary worked out but am still searching for accommodations. Anyone have any suggestions for the following cities:

Munich
Salzburg
Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Rothenburg O.D.T.
Bacharach

We are a family of 2 adults and 2 boys (10 yrs old). Our trip will be July 21, 2014 through August 6, 2014. While in the Munich, Salzburg & GaP areas we will have a car and are not opposed to staying outside city limits within reason. We were thinking it might be fun for all to stay at a smaller B&B or Farm Stay to interact and talk more with locals.

If you know of any nice places to stay please advise. I'm researching any and everything and want to make a decision on this quickly.

Thank you,
Ben

Hi Ben,

Less than 30 minutes from Salzburg in the Berchtesgaden area are our 2 favorites:

Another farm stay near the above 2 friends loved:

About 10 to 15 minutes outside Rothenburg, we loved our stay here:

While not in Garmisch, but 20 minutes away in Mittenwald:

We have plenty of pic's at:

Hi Ben- I won't give you any "fav" hotels because they might be filled up or very expensive this late. I would look at Booking.com to get some ideas on amenities, cost, and locations. I have also found that they have pretty honest ratings. However, here is a tip that may be of interest...

On weekends, try to stay in the larger cities (Munich and Salzburg). During the week, rooms may be more available and less expensive in the smaller towns. Don't forget to take parking costs into account where applicable.

Have a great trip!!!

With a car, I wouldn't stay within Munich's inner core unless the hotel provides parking. And that's going to eliminate all but the most expensive hotels. There's a parking garage near Hotel an der Opera, but during working hours during the week, it tends to fill up. Another option would be Erding, mainly because the kids (and adults) may enjoy Therme Erding.

For Garmsich-Partenkirchen, Gasthof Fraundorfer.

Thanks Tom. I was planning to get the car when we leave Munich and use it in the Salzburg / Berchtesgaden area as well as the Garmisch area to explore some. During our time in Munich i was thinking to stick with public transportation.

Bacharach has a castle, Burg Stahleck, that is now a hostel. I have never stayed there, but it gets good reviews and might be fun for the boys (and the grown ups too - it is definitely on my wish list for our next trip to the Rhine). You should get a copy of Rick Steves' Germany guidebook for this kind of question and also good advice about things to do while you are there. Have a great trip!

Our family of four stayed near the Wies Kirche not far from Ludwig's big castles. It was a great 2 bedroom pension and a very good deal. That was in 2011. I remember the owner was easy to contact over email. Her emails were in English. You would have to use google translate to check out this accommodation. http://www.scholderhof.de/
Highly recommended. I kept a blog when we were in this area:http://familyineurope.travellerspoint.com/8/
You'll see pictures of the apartment on our blog too. I highly recommend the hike you'll see on the blog. So cool!

We are going back to Europe this summer and will stay at Hotel Brack in Munich. (Kids are now 7 & 9) They have family rooms at reasonable costs. We will stay there in July. http://www.hotel-brack.de/

Please message me if you have any questions. Happy travels!

In Bacharach we stayed at the Hotel Altkonischer Hof Our room had a huge balcony overlooking the main street which we enjoyed a lot, nice breakfast, removed from the train lines. Parking a block away. We enjoyed a couple of meals at the friendly Cafe Rusticana just across from the hotel. The previously mentioned hostel looked to be WAY up. Enjoy your. Trip.
PS I just read the rest of your post. My suggestion above is a standard hotel, not large, but not a B &B. We did walk past the Malerwinkel one day while walking around. Maybe more to your interest..a small creek and hills for running boys...it is a bit removed from town, but like maybe 10 minutes. We never stayed there but just walked past. I think rick mentions it in his book. We had a car in this area and that was nice. I get my castles mixed up, but your boys may like exploring the ruins of one nearby...Rheinfels? But don't take my word for it. Have fun

Thank you Denny.

By the time we make it to this point in our trip we aren't too concerned with staying at any one particular kind of lodging. Whatever we find that looks nice for the money. As for the Rheinfels castle in St Goar we are planning on visiting that with the boys.

Thanks to everyone for all the advice on this forum. If anyone thinks of anything that hasn't been mentioned yet I'm still looking into where to stay in the before mentioned cities.

While in the Rothenburg area we always stay in Dinkelsbuhl and drive to Rothenburg. It was easier with a car and there are some wonderful small hotels... more parking. I don't remember the names of where I stayed, but there were a number of hotels that all had a similar feeling and wonderful breakfast. One did serve dinner and also had a vending machine right outside our room which dispensed beer and wine. My grandson found this quite amusing. I liked the small town and less touristy feeling in Dinkelsbuhl. About a 10 minute drive to R if I remember correctly.
