My wife and I have a day or two in western Germany. Has anyone been to Aachen or Monschau, and if so, is it worth our time? Perhaps we should just keep driving to the Rhine, but this area seems to be interesting. Any thoughts?
Aachen has a unique cathedral mosaic interior. It is worth a stop
I was in Aachen back when it was West Germany, and I suspect the core interesting stuff hasn't changed much. Do go and remember that German history is far longer than World Wars. Aachen is an interesting monument to Charlemagne, the guy who did his best to keep what lights he could on in Europe in the Dark Ages.
Of the two places here, I've only been to Aachen. The last time was in 1999, the first time on my second trip over in 1973...a nice town, interesting, see the cathedral. If you're interested in small towns on the Rhine and on the left bank, I suggest Bonn, Bad Godesberg, Neuss, Düren.
sorry not sure when you are going. If you have a car..Bastogen is a 2-3 hour drive and well worth it....also half way is an american cemetary worth seeing and the the point where Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg meet
