A8 Munich to Austria Toll Purchase

Hello,

Was curious if anyone on this forum has driven the A8 from Munich to Austria border. Is it better to purchase the Vignette at border station or find a service station prior to crossing border? I will be traveling in June and unsure how frequent availability to purchase the toll stickers are in Germany. Thanks in advance for all the recommendations.

We purchased our Vignette just west of the Austria border on A8. Huge service station; there may have been a sign announcing vignette sales inside. Looks like the exit is for Piding if memory serves and my brief glance at Google Maps is on target.

(FWIW: We were frustrated that the rental car GPS didn't recognize "Mondsee" or "Salzburg", but the signage was good and we had no problem. Discovered the next day that we had failed to adjust the GPS "settings" so the car knew we'd crossed a border.)

definitely get it as you head south. You won't be able to miss the signs before the service areas. Check the date before you leave the counter (I've never known it to be wrong) and make sure that you stick it in the right place. Instructions are on the Vignette backing in several languages including English. Keep the counterfoil.

DJ, that link to autobahn rest stops was very helpful. I was able to confirm the rest stop (Hochfelln Sud) does indeed have Vignettes. Thanks for everyone's help. I will make sure to get the pass prior to border.

The first rest stop on the A8 that sells the Austrian vignette is Holzkirchen, about 30 km from Munich. I would buy it there, because the closer you get to the Austrian border, the more people want to buy it, and on some days you might not find a parking space at the small rest stop Hochfelln.
