With a new year starting, its time to think about upcoming travel, in this case two months in Europe this summer, likely mid July to mid September. One place my wife and I would enjoy exploring would be northern Germany, and a week along the Baltic coast might be nice. I'm wondering if there would be somewhere that might be along a nice stretch of coast but also well situated for a few day trips with public transportation. The island of Rugen looks nice but I'm not sure about logistics for day trip travel and I do realize that we would be traveling at a busy time.
Public transport is a little bit more seldom at the German Baltic Coast.
Rügen island is a good option. Sassnitz is a ferry port to Denmark and Sweden, also a ferry to Danish island Bornholm which is recommended for a few nice days.
Others coastal stretch options are:
- Usedom island close to Poland
- Stralsund (good access to Ruegen)
- Warnemünde close to Rostock (incl. ferry port to Denmark and Sweden), event Warnemünde week July 5-13
- Wismar and Schwerin
- Travemünde to Scharbeutz with access to Lübeck
- Fehmarn island and Heiligenhafen (ferry port to Denmark)
- Laboe with subway memorial U-995 (and close Kiel), annual event Kiel Week end of June
- Eckernförde bay with good access to Schleswig incl. Gottorf castle and Haithabu
- Flensburg bay (renowned brewery) incl. ferry connection to Danish mild island Ærø

VMV provides information about connections in Mecklenburg.Vorpommern.
Sometimes Flixbus is also helpful.
The 2025 summer vacations of German states are varying over your whole travel time. Likely at the end the prices might be a littlelower.
