A week in Germany (starting and ending in Ramstein)

Hello everyone, my family of four will be flying into and out of Ramstein the first week of April (Tues - Tues) We have a rental car reserved and plan to start our trip in Heidelberg. The next destination will be Rothenburg odt, then we are headed south for a few days in and around Garmisch/Mittenwald/Fussen, making a few short stops on the Romantic Road en route. (Yes we know its not very romantic, just a road through some neat towns :)

We want to stay away from Munich on this trip (we are going back in September) and are looking for one more day to fill with a destination that 1.) will be fun for kids (ages 5 and 9) and 2.) not put us further away from our departure point of Ramstein.

Any recommendations?

Additional questions:
1.) Should we expect any interruptions of the Zugspitze cable car / train due to the time of year and weather?
2.) What would be the best home-base for 3 days in the Zugspitze/Fussen area?
3.) If we dipped into Austria for a day, where should we go?

Since you're flying into Ramstein I assume you're military. In that case your home base should be the Edelweiss in G-P. Not only is the location good, the the MWR can get you discounts and travel for the places you listed on your itinerary. If you drive south from RodT thru Augsburg you'll bypass Munich.

If it's not clear, don't bother with the Zugspitze.

For a day in Austria most folks will think Salzburg, but I'll suggest Innsbruck.

You do realize you'll spend an entire day moving from Garmish or Fussen back to Ramstein? Personally I think you'll spend more time traveling then you want, and at best you'll see one town a day.

I wish we could, but they've changed the eligibility for staying there and we don't meet it.

We do anticipate the last day being a 4-5 hour travel day back to Ramstein. Maybe we should skip the Austria side trip and use that extra day to explore in the direction of Ramstein (to decrease the following day's drive time)

You could drive around the backside of the Zugspitze and tick the Austria box. Heading to the Black Forest will get you back in the direction toward Ramstein.

i believe that you can stay in Garmisch at nicer and cheaper places than the Edelweiss, but still take advantage of their tours that they offer.
Age of your kids? Suggestions for things to do with toddlers is way different than things to do with pre-teens or teens.

Well you might want to consider driving to Konstanz instead of Salzburg. You get to see Switzerland and the Alps, and if you want to add ;to that you could stay a night in Strasbourg too. Strasbourg is only a couple hours to Ramstein.

After Fussen look into heading in the direction of Konstanz and then the Black Forest area, or, across the border to the Alsace region of France. There are plenty of small towns to visit and gets you closer to Ramstein.
