A Week in Bavaria

Hello

Attending a Conference in third week of Oct in Munich and we have a week at our disposal post the Conference. We would like to explore the Bavarian Region.

Looking for help in planning an itinerary. We are ok to do two Hotels (One Base in Munich and one another) - 3 to 4 days each. We are fine in doing Day Trips and would be using public Transport. Our return flight to Goa is from Munich. Some of the towns that come up to mind are Nuremberg, Freiburg, Regensburg etc...Basically all the 'Burgs'.

We love exploring old towns. Is there any other must visit Town.

Thank you, we are really looking forward to this holiday with our 3 yr daughter.

Welcome Goabornlad. My first thought is to ask what it is that draws you to Bavaria? I ask because you've listed a bunch of cities, but not anywhere in the mountains or places that are much different from each other (IMO). I'd consider Salzburg (in Austria, a short ride from Munich) as a second base, form which you can visit Berchtesgaden. Or somewhere in the Bavarian Alps like Garmisch-Partenkiechen, with outdoor attractions.

Garmish, Berchtesgaden/Salzburg, Austria, Nuremberg and Regensburg will eat up a week.
Also, consider Augsburg, its over 2000 years old and one day is great for it.

We love exploring old towns.

Regensburg is a good choice for you. So is Bamberg. Munich of course was devastated in the most recent world war and rebuilt, so a visit there can't be premised on its enduring old-world appeal. Freiburg is not remotely close to Bavaria; the ground travel to get there would take a disproportionate amount of time. Here's a map of Bavaria's railways for staying in bounds. All my suggestions have stations and can be found on this map.

"-burg" doesn't necessarily promise old-world sights or medieval castles, which in Bavaria are quite few in number. But Burghausen, not far from the Austrian border, keeps this promise.

The old walled town of Nördlingen is also a very good choice; it lies directly west of Regensburg near Bavaria's western border. Nördlingen, along with nearby Donauwörth and Harburg, are small "Romantic Road" towns that could be visited in a single day if you wanted.

I could spend a week just sitting on the shore at Chiemsee. This time of year you might want to consider going down to Garmish-Partenkirchen for a couple days. The leaves shoulld be turning and if it's clear you can take the ride up the Zugspitze. Or take a day trip to Innsbruck.

If you stay in Munich, you can take the train to Salzburg. The Deutsches Museum has stuff for kids. There's a neat Toy Museum in Nuremberg.

From Nuremberg you have a number of places to choose from; Bamberg, Wurzburg, etc. Even Amberg.

Thank you Stan. As i mentioned We are coming to attend a Conference and hence wished we could visit around Munich and explore some 'Medival' Germany.
In May, we visited Berchesgaten, Salsburg, Hallstat & Inssbruck and hence that is not on our list.

I just want to draw your attention to the Deutschland or “D” ticket. This gives you unlimited rides on local and regional transport throughout Germany for 49 euros a person for a calendar month. My guess is that this would be a very good value for you. If you want more info, let me know. Only high speed trains and a few private companies are not covered.

Also, there is a Bayern pass for Bavaria on the rails. You can only take regional trains that are more crowded and stop more frequently, but you will save a lot.

Some great posts and ideas here...

Since you stated you are looking to base yourselves in Munich and then one other city, I suggest Nuremberg. You can then day trip to Bamberg and Regensburg, both have well-preserved medieval centers.
