9 euro ticket - munich to nuremberg

Hello all!

We will be in Munich in August and planning to get the 9 euro ticket... I was looking for Munich-Nuremberg (planning a day trip there) and db was showing ICE trains, like $70 per round trip... then I click "local transport" and it is much cheaper, shows 9... does anyone know if that route is included in the 9 euro ticket? And if so, then we don;t need to book it, we just show up?

Also going to Garmisch... we can use 9 euro ticket for that too?

Thanks for any insight!
Kim

oh I think that's why it says 9 euro when I look further... I guess I just need to know if these trains you can just show up for - no reservations?

The eligible trains with the 9-Euro ticket are all local/regional train - RE, RB, and S designations. Regional trains tend to travel fairly short distances. Munich > Nuremberg isn't a very long trip, and yes, there are trips by regional train only between them.

As you discovered, Nuremberg and Munich are also connected by ICE trains - long-distance, high-speed trains that continue to other distant places as well (Berlin for example.) Such trains also stop at places along the way (like Nuremberg) which are not so distant. IC, ICE, EC, RJ, and other long-distance high-speed trains are ineligible for use with the 9-Euro ticket.

Munich and Garmisch are connected by regional trains. You don't get to choose. Regional trains don't take reservations. Just get on and take a seat.

Yes, and just to be clear: You only need one 9-Euro-Ticket per calendar month per person (June, July and August only), and that will cover all included local transportation in that month.

The 9. Euro ticket is a great deal. We are using it right now. Here's the best way to use it: Download the DB Navigator app on your phone. You can purchase the ticket through the app or online at www.bahn.de , the Deutschebahn official site (find the toggle to select English, it may be at the bottom of the page). Either way you can find the eticket in the app (when you've registered, of course) under "My Tickets."

To find the right trains, use the "Trip planner" from the app menu. On the left side just above the red Search bar, click the little symbol that indicates search options or filters (looks like little equal sign with circles in the middle, the regular sign for sort features). Once there select 2nd class under "Passengers", then slide over to "Options " and tap "Means of transport". Move the "All" switch to off and the "Regional transport only" switch to on. Now you're all set!
Just put in your origin and destination, set the date and time of departure (or arrival) and the app will give you a selection of just the trains, metros and buses you need. The 9 Euro ticket eligible routes (including metros and buses) are filtered for you. Just beware of any routes that might say "partial fare" because they include a leg on an IC or ICE train.
Enjoy your time in Germany; we certainly are now!

I was looking for Munich-Nuremberg

Make sure that you take the direct train that runs along the ICE route. Curiously, it is called "München-Nürnberg Express", although it is only a regional train and is accessible with the 9€ ticket. It takes about 1:45; the other Munich-Nuremberg regional trains go via Treuchtlingen (some even via Augsburg and Treuchtlingen) and take much longer (2:45-3:00). You have the right train if it stops in Kinding after Ingolstadt (otherwise it will deviate in Ingolstadt towards Treuchtlingen). Be at the station early (at least 15min before departure), because the train will be very full.

Just beware of any routes that might say "partial fare" because they include a leg on an IC or ICE train.

This usually does not concern ICE's but buses. Because of the haste with which the 9E ticket was introduced, bus lines (many of them not operated by DB) could not be included in the data base. Still, the ticket is valid on them.
