8 days self guided prior to Edelweiss 10 day group tour

Would be very appreciative of any advice or must do’s in regard to this itinerary. Please & thank you.

Mapping out 8 self guided days in Germany prior to spending 10 days of guided tours through the military hotel Edelweiss.
Hotels are based on finding excellent rates so I realize some of the towns are off the beaten path,

Please provide any guidance you might have for this tentative itinerary.

Not sure where you are coming from, but certainly do not recommend driving anywhere after a trans-Atlantic flight if you are coming from N. America. It is dangerous.
Take the train to Wiesbaden, do some sight-seeing here or in Mainz. Pick up your car the next day if you need it, though it doesn't look you do until after your visit to Rüdesheim. You are paying for 2-3 days rental when you don't need a car.
What time of year are you planning to visit? There are sure to be festivals to recommend in the spring, summer and fall.

We are coming from the US in August. Thank you for the advice. Does Day 2 look doable to you, or is that packing too much in? Thanks again!

For Day 5 I would not drive all the way to the Romantic Road and then back to Karlsruhe. I would recommend spending your time in Strasbourg or Colmar. You still get the half timbered buildings, and both are just neat to walk around.

Or if those two are not your cup of tea, then spending some time in the Blackforest would be next on my recommendation list for that day. There is a ton of hiking and cute villages nestled in there.

My third recommendation for the area is going to Saint Avold France, there is an American Military Cemetary that has over 10,000 soliders that were killed in WWII. It is in a beautiful setting.

taking a train from the Frankfurt Airport station (right in the airport) to Wiesbaden is incredibly simple.
