75 years ago: the US army takes Nuremberg

I imagine that some people here under normal circumstances might have been in Nuremberg right now. Perhaps it is of interest that almost exactly 75 years ago the US Army took Nuremberg and on April 22nd blew up the big Nazi emblem on the Nazi Party Rally Grounds. A (very) short historical film from the US Army archive captures the moment.

Nuremberg has always been on my list to visit. I recently finished reading ‘The Boys in the Boat’. This site was referenced multiple times in their story. It has a detailed account of who and how Germany filmed the events held there. This novel is about the U. Washington rowing team in the 1930’s. Highly recommend the book and just thinking about their story today helps me to remember to stay strong and preserve through difficult times.

Thanks for sharing this. Another thanks to Diane for mentioning "The Boys in the Boat." Coming from Seattle it has a special place in my heart. I too would highly recommend the book.

Thanks so much for starting this thread. Nuremberg is one of our favorite German towns. We love the Christmas Market there. We've been twice, and will be back Dec. 2021.

Nuremburg is very underrated. I prefer it to Munich, except that Munich has great art musuems.

The area just to the north of Nürnberg around Kalchreuth is famous for blooming cherry and apple trees this time of year. Really nice for a visit and a walk/hike, particularly when hotels and restaurants are open again with early opened Biergarten and outside seating. Beautiful landscapes with good Mittelfranken food and beer.

Thanks for mentioning Kalchreuth. I’m in the area most years - not this one though - and I haven’t discovered Kalchreuth yet.

Next time ....

Yea, and it's almost everywhere across the so called Fränkische Schweiz. Gräfenberg, Gößweinstein, Pottenstein, Tüchersfeld and an dozen of other lovely villages .... I had a week planned in August around the now cancelled Bayreuth festival in Obertrubach in the lovely Trubach valley. Hope the Post Inn in Obertrubach will survive the crisis. Thanks goodness Bayreuth tickets are valid for next year.

Diane, if you enjoyed The Boys in the Boat, you might also enjoy Games of Deception. It is about the first U.S. basketball team to play in the Olympics...1936...Berlin. Lots of history of that time. The author is Andrew Maraniss. Relatively short read, but very, very good.
