Hello we will fly in and out of Munich in mid-August. Total 7 days in the area. We have already seen Munich before so wont spend much time in the city. Want to do Bavaria and Salzburg and the beautiful area around salzburg. What should I prioritize and how much time to give to each location?
Wife & I did similar trip last year (also included Oktoberfest), however we drove into Munich from Lindau. We stopped off at two locations before hitting arriving in Munich:
- Day 1 - Night in Hohenschwangau. I couldn’t get past the huge number of tourists visiting the castle during the day, however at night when all was quiet, it was positively magical. Would probably stay in Füssen next time.
- Day 2 - Night in Pöcking (near Lake Starnberg). Visited Andechs Brewery & monastery. Beautiful & would highly recommend as an easy day trip from Munich, no advantage to lodging in Pöcking. Dropped off car in Munich
- Day 3-5 – Munich (stayed at Hotel Model One near Deutsches Museum). Englisher Garten & Augustiner Keller. 2 days at Oktoberfest. Favorite city in all of Germany, couldn’t pass up. Easy to travel from Munich to all parts of Bavaria for day trips.
- Day 6-7 – Took train to Salzburg. Lodged in old town. SOM tour (I was skeptical, but highly recommended way to visit lake district around Salzburg. Dining at Augustinerbräu - Kloster Mülln.
- Day 8 – Took train to Hallstatt. Stayed overnight on lake. Such a spectacular lake would spend minimum of 2 nights next time.
Haben Sie eine gute Reise!
- How long was the train to hallstatt? 2. Which is more scenic - Bavaria or Austrian lake district?
We were thinking of setting up base in Garmisch for the first few days, doing the two castles, zugspitze and whatever else is not to be missed.
From there want to figure out some way to get to Salzburg and Austrian scenery. Will spend at least 2 days in Austria.
Thanks
Make time for BMW World and the Museum. And the food across the street at the Olympic Park is really good.

- Ans: It’s a fairly lengthy 2.5 hours to get from Salzburg to Hallstatt. Once you arrive you really must spend 2 nights there. Austria Lake District is IMO much more beautiful. I’ve spent a lot of time around Lake Tahoe in California and found Hallstatt to be above and beyond than I’ve ever experienced..

Ans: We thought about setting up in Garmisch. but decided on Salzburg It offered so much more and much more geographically desireable.

Ans: Take the quick train trip from Munich and settle in Salzburg. You will love Austria
We just started a similar trip. 1 adult and 2 kids, both 18. We are on Day 4 in Munich. 2 more nights here, then off to Fussen for 2 nights, then Salzburg for 3 nights, ending up at the Marriott Moxy (Munich Airport hotel) for our last night. The highlight so far is Schloss Nymphenburg. We spent most of the day there hiking the grounds and exploring the palace and outer buildings. Olympiapark was a nice way to end the day, and the kids second time there.
