There's a big up-charge for returning a car in a different country. Have a great trip and fun planning . Safe travels.

Do check on that drop-off fee for taking a car from Italy to Germany. My son said it was going to cost 500 euro extra. You also have to consider the cost of fuel, any required vignettes (might be necessary in Switzerland), possible ZTL violation tickets in Italy, and the challenge and expense of parking. It might well be better to take the train to Munich and rent your car there.

The train from Milan to the town of Como is cheap and easy; and from there to Lugano the same. Then there are direct trains from Lugano to Zurich, taking less than 3 hours. Regular price is 68 CHF but if you purchase in advance (2 months or so)) you can get SuperSaver tickets on this route for 34,80CHF.

Then from Zurich to Munich, the direct train takes 3.5 hours.tickets bought in advance are 58 CHF plus 5 for the reserved seat, so 63 CHF.

Or you could take the scenic Bernina route, either from Lugano (bus to Tirano and train from there) or from Varenna (train to Varenna to Tirano to catch the Bernina Express). This way skips Lugano.

hey hey darens500
you will need your IDP (international driving permit) get at AAA.com
check that drop off fee for the car in another country, friends had an 800E charge OUCH!!! why a big car? the parking can be a pain, plus finding a spot (does hotel have/how small or big to fit car), no deductable insurance,
like the idea of the bernina express train and renting car in germany.
we would buy food & wine for a picnic on the train to enjoy in comfort. pack a corkscrew
it's your trip, just some thoughts.
aloha
