50 minute layover in Zurich?

I am afraid I know the answer, but I'll ask anyway: Our return home from Berlin to Chicago is on SWISS air. Berlin to Zurich with only 50min overlap before the Zurich to Chicago flight.

Is that an impossibly short layover, or is SWISS air + the Zurich airport good about ensuring international connections are maintained?

Thanks,
Brent

Your last sentence sums it up. Swiss is very good about making sure everybody makes the connection. Did 90 minutes last year and it was positively leisurely. If 50 minutes is a legal connection, they will make it happen unless your inbound flight is impossibly late.

But I see there is a 9:40 flight out of Berlin that will give you an extra hour. Why not take that one.

Yes it is possible. I had a one hour connection at ZRH on a flight from Berlin to Zurich to Washington Dulles. My flight landed at least 10 minutes late. Nevertheless, I made it through immigration and to the gate in time to board. There was no time to stop in the restroom or to buy a bottle of water; they were boarding when I got to the gate. When I went to board, I got pulled for a secondary security screening; the security officer told me not to worry as the plane would not leave until they were done. My checked luggage also made the connection.

Thank you @Sam and @Laura - I feel much better about this connection!

@Sam - thank you for the suggestion; however the price increase for that flight almost doubles the total cost per person, perhaps because that Berlin to Zurich flight is operated by Air Baltic instead of SWISS. We'll take the minimal risk of being stuck in Zurich ... for two people from Kansas there are worse fates for sure :)

That was part of my decision criteria when I took the short connection. How bad would it be if I got stuck in Switzerland an extra day?

Good Luck with the connection.
