5 Quick Days in Germany before Italy - Itinerary Thoughts

Any thoughts on my itinerary is appreciated.

Me - Solo Travelling 48 year old Male

Background - Originally I had just planned on a 2 and 1/2 week Italy trip, but decided to add Germany for 2 reasons. 1) Airfare was noticeably cheaper to drop off in Germany for a few days and I lived in Germany as an Air Force Brat from ages 2-7. Will be renting a car for first 4 days. Have not been to Germany since childhood. I will be returning to Germany for a more thorough trip in a few years.

November 17 - Arrive Munich/ Get Rental/ Dachau/ Drive to Giebelstadt. This is where I lived as a child and wanted to see my parent's old stomping grounds. In addition I will be having dinner with my babysitter who I have not seen since we were 7 and 15 respectively.
Sleep in Giebelstadt.(Gasthof Lutz) - My mother worked here when I was young.

November 18 - Drive to Rothenburg/ Stay all Day and Spend the Night (Gasthof Zur Sonne Rothenburg)

November 19 - Drive to Fussen/ Visit the Castles / Spend Night in Fussen (Hotel Fantasia)

November 20 - Drive to Munich Airport. Drop Car/ Train to City Center/ Drop Luggage at Hotel (Buddy Hotel). ALte Pinakhotek/ Egyptian Museum/ Residenz Dinner at Hofbrauhaus. Spend Night (Buddy Hotel)

November 21 - Munich Walk/ Nymphenburg palace?/ Will be taking City Line night train to Venice this evening.

Thanks for any thoughts!!

Hi John,

November 20 - drive to nearby Garmisch, drop the car, look around (Germany's highest peak, the Zugspitze is here), then head to Munich by train. You do not have to return the car to the location you picked it up (airport). No extra charges.

Are you sure you want to drive the same day you arrive? Jet lag, lack of sleep, and not being familiar with the local road system can all be a problem. There are some people that are not bothered by any of those things. Others think they are ok but are really driving somewhat impaired. Still others are complete zombies and should never drive the same day. Don't mean to rain on your parade, just something to think about.

3 years ago, did a trip to UK and had no issues driving day 1 from Edinburgh to Inverness (even on the opposite side of the road!). I have several days before I take off to adjust my sleep cycle and have little issue sleeping on the plane en route.

Thanks for the heads up though regarding this issue and it's potential hazards.

Cool to have a contact there. Giebelstadt is in one of Bavaria's more interesting regions - FRANCONIA - where there's a whole lot you might experience. Rothenburg is one option - a choice for those who prefer touristy experiences, the company of fellow international tourists, and the attention of shopkeepers and innkeepers who accommodate tourists. Alternatively, you can visit some towns with more authentic German character in that area. Bamberg, Wuerzburg, Bad Windsheim, Sommerhausen, Iphofen, Marktbreit, and Ochsenfurt would be just a few of the many options.

It's sort of the same situation in Fuessen - the "castles" (not really, they're palaces, N'stein a late-19th-century palace) are a big draw for tourists, but what you might do instead is check out the Castle Road, which passes through Franconia on its way to Prague.
