5 Hr Layover in Frankfurt - Wiesbaden perhaps?

We are traveling from Venice-Frankfurt-Denver, with a 5 hr layover in Frankfurt. I'm assuming luggage will already be transferred (unless I'm wrong about that?). With that much time before our flight to Denver, can we either take a train or bus for a quick visit to Wiesbaden? It was my grandparents' hometown and I'd love to see where they lived. If Wiesbaden is too far, any other suggestions? It would be a shame to spend all that time at the airport.

Wiesbaden is almost right next to the airport. 5 hours is cutting it pretty tight, but you probably have time for at least a very short visit.

I remember years ago taking a bus from the airport to Wiesbaden. Is that still a possibility or do I need to take the train?

Your layover is a bit on the short side, especially flying to the US. The S-bahn takes between 30-40 min. from the regional train station to Wiesbaden, track 3. Frankfurt only takes 11 min. Train every 15 min. going in either direction.

Can you make your layover a bit longer? It would be a shame to pass up seeing your grandparents hometown.

Coming from Venice, it should only take you about 30-40 min. to emerge into the airport. Which airline are you using for both of these flights? For your flight back to the US, you should be at the airport 2 hours before departure time.

We fly Lufthansa from Venice to Frankfurt and then again to Denver. My thinking was that the luggage would already be forwarded on to the next flight so we're only dealing with a possible carryon and can move quickly to catch a train. When we return to the airport we would go straight through the security checkpoint to the gate.

Lufthansa uses terminal 1, and the Regional train station is right underneath it by Arrival Gate B-1. Just follow the signs. You will need small bills or coins for your ticket. Get a group ticket which costs 15.80 €. This will be the only ticket you will need all day and it is valid for up to 5 people. You don't need to validate it, just keep it. Ticket machines are touch screen and switch into English.
