5 days of sightseeing Munich and Salzburg, before Heidelberg

Flying into Frankfurt early morning Oct 9th and plan to head to Nuremberg by train, overnight there and explore town on 10th, end of day train to Munich, then overnight in Munich 11th-13th with one day exploring Munich, 1 day tour to Neuschwanstein castle, and 1 day trip via train to Salzburg. Then onto Heidelberg early on 10/14 For my husband’s work assignment. Is that do-able? Should I go from Nuremberg to Salzburg and do one overnight there and then two nights in Munich before Heidelberg? We just want to sightsee major historic buildings, explore castles, and try different foods. We have spent a lot of time in Baden Wurrtemberg in the past, this will be first time in Bavaria other than day trip to Rothenburg de tauber on prior trip.

It is a little busy but easily doable. My personal preference is to minimize hotels so I would probably just base out of Munich and do everything as day trips, including Nuremberg, but both of your suggested itineraries work too.

One suggestion I have though is if you are flying Lufthansa (or United) you can book the ICE from Frankfurt to Nuremberg or Munich as part of your ticket if you use the rail stations IATA code as your final destination: ZAQ for Nuremburg HBF, ZMU for Munich HBF.

It sounds like a quantity-over-quality itinerary to me. A day in Salzburg might be OK but subtract nearly 4 hours for the roundtrip transport from and back to Munich. Subtract 5 hours of transport for your roundtrip transport to N'stein (25-minute tour length!) and back (not including the 40-minute walk up to the entrance from the final bus stop.)

"We just want to sightsee major historic buildings..."

With this goal, you might be missing the boat by leaving your Nuremberg base. I would focus on the World Heritage sites that surround Nuremberg. There are several good choices.

Bamberg's Altstadt, 45 minutes by direct train from N'berg.

Regensburg's Altstadt, on the Danube River...often referred to as Germany's best-preserved old-world town center. 60 minutes from Nuremberg by direct train.

Bayreuth's Margravial Opera House is amazing. 60 minutes from Nuremberg by direct train.

How about these less-major but fascinating historic buildings... Bad Windsheim's Franconian Open-Land Museum, 60 minutes from Nuremberg by direct train.

I believe you can book your onward train from FRA if you're flying on Condor, as well.

You're going to be in Nuremberg while the Kerwe is running next door in Furth, and you want to go somewhere else? Do that and you'll miss one of the best fests in Bavaria.

You really need to re-think this plan. Base out of Nuremberg, See that town. Go to Furth, go to Wurzburg, maybe even visit Regensburg, but don't waste half the time you have traveling to Neuschwanstein and Salzburg.

What is Kerwe? What will be activities and atmosphere? I always think special events and fairs will be more crowded than regular tourist sights. But not sure

I think that I would rather go all the way to Salzburg from Nuremberg and then go to Munich. I went from Rothenburg to Salzburg. No problem
