5 Day Family Itinerary Black Forest Region

We are two American families (8 in total - 4 parents, 4 kids ages 6 to 13) who will be coming to the Black Forest during our school holiday the last full week of October. We are traveling from the Netherlands but one family will be driving from Basel, and I think the other will be flying into Frankfurt. We would like to spend 4 to 5 nights in the Black Forest region with at least one day enjoying the spa in Baden Baden and at least one day of easy hiking. We love great food, wine and beer, gorgeous scenery and interesting history and culture. Our kids are seasoned travelers and are easy going. Would it be best to split our stay between two towns - Baden Baden and Freiburg? Or make one place our base and take the train/bus/car to different places each day? Thanks for any help!

Best to visit Freiburg before 1pm (Monday-Saturday) to see the lively outdoor market surrounding the Cathedral.

It is quite lively although disproportinately filled with stalls selling the same hot sausages. Some wonderful flower stalls but not much use for the average traveller unfortunately. We bought some lovely jam and some liquers and there's also a very good wine shop close to the main car park. I enjoyed Freiburg, was disappointed with the restaurant recommendation given to us by several people, very tourist focused with fast turnover of mediocre food, unfortunately I can't recall the name.
