Hi My husband and I will be driving to Germany from Calais in September. This is our first time in Germany. My husband wants to see Edenkoben where his family was from and we want to go to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. We would love to see a castle or two as well. We are more art, river, and nature people. I am sad we won’t be there for Christmas markets! Are there any suggestions for an itinerary and towns to stay in? Reading about Edenkoben, it doesn’t seem to be a place with much there. Maybe a few hour visit on our way to other places? I would think Autumn colors will
be nice this time of year.
I drove the Romantic Road eons ago. It was wonderful. Maybe that will meet your objectives. Have fun!

This looks wonderful! Thank you for sharing!
We would love to see a castle or two as well.
These 3 are clustered near each other in Germany's Rhine/Mosel region and the area hub-city of Koblenz.
Burg Eltz (near the Mosel River town of Cochem)
Reichsburg Castle (in Cochem)
Marksburg Castle (in Braubach, on the Rhine River just south of Koblenz)
Edenkoben is not far from the Hambacher Schloss (10km)

Hambach Castle is regarded as the cradle of German democracy.
Enjoy the wine in Edenkoben and have a meal at Weingasthof Edel-Brauch
As nature is concerned the Pfälzer Wald is next door west of Edenkoben 5km
As river is concerned Speyer with the Kaiserdom and the Rhine is 30 km east of Edenkoben
Not to forget Reichsburg Trifels near Annweiler 25 km southwest of Edenkoben

So if you like wine ,good local food an German History stay a night in Edenkoben and surrounding area.
Continuing your travel to Rothenburg ob der Tauber its a 2,5 hrs drive along Speyer,Sinsheim Heilbronn and Schwäbisch Hall to Rothenburg using mainly the A6 Autobahn.
I reconmend a stop over at Schwabisch Hall
If you plan to take the more northerly route from Calais via the A61/E40 then Bingen and Rüdesheim are almost on your way, it sounds like they would be right up your street! Take the little ferry across the Rhine from the one to the other.
Have a great trip! David
I wouldn’t count on much in the way of fall colors
Thank you for your tips!
