4 days in Munich

Me & my wife in our late 40s plan to visit Munich in the second week of October for 4 days.

We are interested in seeing all the historical places, local markets, explore the city & enjoy the nature.

Please advise on what all should be covered & whether we need to hire a car or use public transport.

Any day tours (if we have the time) that we should do ?

As regards stay please suggest some mid budget hotels.

Rick's guidebook has everything you need to plan your stay. There's really no need to rent a car. Munich's public transit system is very good. Have a look at getting day passes, good on buses, trams and subway.

Rick's book has good recommendations for smaller European style hotels, but we are staying at the Mercure Munich Altstadt. Yes, it's a chain hotel, but we've got points to use. :P You want a place within easy walking distance of an Sbahn or Ubahn stop. Staying in the old city is handy, but I'd avoid the seedier area immediately south and east of the Hbh.

Rick's City Walk will easily fill a day if you go at a relaxed pace. Then there's the Residenz and Nymphenberg palaces. Dachau is a half day - sobering, but completely worth your time. If you like Museums, there are plenty. The Pinakoteks (art museums), Egyptian museum, Deutches museum (science), city museum, just off the top of my head. There are several churches in the old city that are worth a look (covered in Rick's book).

If that's not enough to fill your time, you could do a day trip to Salzburg or to Neuchwanstein.

Four days or four nights (effectively 3 days). My partner and I spent four nights as part of a 17 day trip through Bavaria and had no problem filling the time in Munich with Munich. We stayed in the Altstadt and spent several days just seeing the shopping streets of Kaufingerstrasse and Maximilianstrasse, Frauenkirche, Marienplatz, the Hofbräuhaus, and the area around Sendllingertor. Another day we went to the Deutsches Museum. There were so many things in Munich we did not see.

Some of the hotels mentioned on this site are Am Viktualienmarkt, Blauer Bock, Siebel, Lindner, and Münchnerkindl.

In the film below are some of the most interesting attractions and sites in Munich:

Almost all of them are within walking distance from the old town, except for Nymphenburg castle and botanical gardens, which are accessible by public transport (20 minutes). You don't need a car. Public transport is one of the best in the world.

Car rentals are appropriate in certain instances ( the Scottish Highlands , Rural UK , are two good examples ) . In major cities , they are a nuisance - little or no parking , congested streets and numerous other impediments . Munich has an absolutely splendid public transportation system ( S Bahn , U Bahn , and Trams ) and you will not want for a car

Spend four full days in Munich, forget the rental car. The main question is why would you want to rent a car?
