4 Days in Germany

Hello fellow travelers, We have 4 days in Germany before heading out of the country. What do you suggest we see while we are there? We are headed to Amsterdam however, we do not need to head that way because from what I can tell, the best sights are in the other direction. Thank You!!

sorry, Germany is a large and diverse country.

Where are you?

Where will you be starting from? It makes a difference. I think the best sights are in the middle Rhine/ Mosel valleys, which actually are in the direction towards Amsterdam, on the west side of Germany. You don't have time for much more than one stop.

4 days? Is it really 4 full days & nights or are you including travel on the first and last day?

Visit one city like Berlin, Munich or Nürnberg. Maybe take a day trip. Really experience where you will visit which is why I suggest you STAY in the same city for that time.

We are arriving from Canada and there are 2 of us in our party. I know 4 days is not much time but we want to make the most of our time there before we land in Amsterdam. We have just begun to plan our trip and we are open to pretty much anything. We are landing in Frankfurt in the early morning and have 3 nights and 4 full days in Germany before we head to Amsterdam on the morning of the 5th day. We love history, quaint towns, and at times, the happenings of a city. So, we will pretty much take all options into consideration.

Thank You!!

You don't say WHEN you are making this trip.

It's an hour or so west from Frankfurt by train to the Rhine River Gorge gateway towns of Rüdesheim and Bingen, just across the river from R'heim. From either of these towns you can cruise the most scenic part of the Rhine past dozens of castles, vineyard-clad hillsides, and old-world towns... As long as you aren't traveling in the dead of winter that is.

The Rhine towns between R'heim and Koblenz, plus the Mosel River towns, and the castles on/near both river valleys, will keep you more than busy during that short time. For bigger cities, head to Trier, Cologne, Koblenz or Mainz.

Boppard on the Rhine is a good base town - a large selection of lodgings (several right on the river) and restaurants as well as a central location...you can visit both river valleys by train from here, and most trips will be free of charge, thanks to the Guest Ticket program in Boppard:

Thank you ever so much for your recommendations. We will be arriving at the beginning of July. Do you think we should rent a car or use the train system?

Thank you in advance!

OK, both river valleys will be busy at that time, weekdays a bit less so, but do reserve your lodgings well in advance for the best selection. From FRA airport, to the Rhine/Mosel, there's no merit in getting tickets early - just buy as needed - but for your final journey to A'dam, you'll want to book those in advance for the best pricing. If you had a longer visit in mind, a car might be handy somewhere, but towns in both river valleys are well served by train - as the map I posted shows, the Rhine has tracks on both riverbanks. The Mosel River has a railway between Koblenz and Trier as well, with a branch railway to Traben-Trarbach (nice place for wine-lovers and for a river cruise to Bernkastel.)

This map shows the railway from Koblenz (at the top)_to Moselkern (for the hike to Burg Eltz Castle), to Cochem (popular destination, Reichsburg Castle), to Bullay and to Trier (Ancient Roman settlement.)

The map below shows the offshoot railway from the rail junction town of Bullay to Traben-Trarbach (known as the Moselweinbahn or Mosel Wine Railway):

The Mosel cruise from Traben-Trarbach to Bernkastel is a delight.
