4 1/2 Days Garmisch/Oberammergau/Neuschwanstein

After 4 1/2 days visiting friends in Munich in mid May, we would like to get into the mountains and castles south. We would like to use trains and buses to travel. Our idea is to train to Garmisch and spend 2 nights there to go up Zugsptize and take a day trip to Oberammergau. Then what is the best way to get to the castles around Neuschwanstein---train or bus? We would like to spend 2 1/2 days there. Make sense? Suggestions for lodging in Garmisch and near Neuschwanstein and local sites would be appreciated.

Thanks!

You can easily get to Oberammergau by bus, but once you get there, you will be half way to Hohenschwangau (Neuschwanstein). Suggest you go to Oberammergau, look around, spend the night here, then go to Hohenschwangau by bus in the morning. If you leave for Oberammergau first thing in the morning, you could check in and have time to go to Linderhof, come back, and spend the evening in Oberammergau.

I've stayed at a number of hotels in GaP over the years. Here's my favorite high-end place:

Altas Grand- try to ask for the Ludwig or Sissi suites, if you can. Really great breakfast spread.

If on a tighter budget, this place is lot's of fun and still perfectly nice:

Fraundorfer The restaurant downstairs has live music most nights.

Both these hotels are on Ludwigstraße in the Partenkirchen section of town. It has that cutesy Bavarian Alpine look that most travelers love.

During the summer, though, I prefer to stay on the Garmisch side of town, because the Kurpark has free nightly concerts. Hotel Wittelsbacher Hof probably needs a little bit of updating in it's interior decoration, but it's a more than adequate establishment. The sauna facilities, at least, are much nicer than you would expect for the price of the hotel.

Did the Neuschwanstein castles with my wife and son in 2008, We did it all be car..for me it was worth the price. ONE BIG HINT!!!
Order your tickets to the castle before on-line before you leave and get there early. We did this.sauntered up to the "will- call" window, grabbed out tickets and we were off and running. Meanwhile hundreds of people were waiting in the ticket line...
