36 Hours Around Ingolstadt....What To Do?

I am going to be around Ingolstadt for approx an evening and the whole following day and need some recommendations as to where to go or what to do. I will have a car so can drive around to visit places, but rather not get too far out since I fly out of Munich on the third day. (Don't need Munich recommendations, will be there at the beginning of the trip.)

Looking for something like a scenic drive route while visiting some small towns or attractions. One idea was to head up to Nürnberg for dinner and the night then Rothenburg ob der Tauber for a day trip. But I am open to other suggestions.

Thank you.

Fantastic!! Thank you so much. Will do this on the first day. Any ideas for a day trip the next full day?

What that Ingolstadt city walk brochure does not mention is that the Old Anatomy Building (now the German Museum of Medical History) was the setting used by Mary Shelley in her 1818 novel Frankenstein.

Nürnberg would be an easy and fascinating day-trip from Ingolstadt. Walk through the medieval city center, try some delicious Lebkuchen (gingerbread). Take Tram No. 9 from the Hauptbahnhof (accessible via pedestrian tunnel from the medieval gate) to the NS Doku-Zentrum. Read up on the city's history -- many otherwise-unassuming buildings have fascinating stories. Check YouTube for clips from Leni Riefenstahl's 1934 propaganda film Triumph of The Will with recognizable scenes of old Nürnberg.

Hi,

That following day part of your stay in Ingolstadt, I'm envious since you'll have time for the Neues Schloss, that is, if you are deep into history seen from the German perspective. I would definitely set aside a few hours for the esoteric exhibit im Neuen Schloß.

Kelheim isn't that far away. If you have a huge interest in the Napoleonic period, you can consider a visit to the Befreiungshalle. Don't expect any real history lesson, but enjoy the view. If Napoleonic history strikes you as lukewarm, though, don't bother.

Hi,

Since you have a car, getting from Ingolstadt to Kelheim is doable. It's a long trek up to the Befreiungshalle. I visited the place only once in 1992 as a day trip by train from Regensburg. It is well worth seeing for the historical perspective and the view. The purpose of the monument was to commemorate the victories of the Allies over Napoleon in the War of Liberation 1813-14 (der Befreiungskrieg) and the final defeat of Napoleon in 1815.

What you see listed are the events and their dates certainly not a reflection of historical accuracy in these years of trying to bring about the defeat of Napoleon from the minor Treffen (a skirmish) to something major, ie, Schlacht (a battle). Both words "Treffen" and "Schlacht" are used in this list. The list of events in the Befreiungshalle reveals clearly how "historical spin" can be used by omitting every reversal, defeat (minor or major) suffered by the Allies at the hands of Napoleon from 1813-15. Notice the Napoleonic victories (Lützen, Champaubert, Dresden, Hanau, Montmirail, Ligny, Vauchamps) during these years are not listed.

Given the choice of Kelheim or Neues Schloss in Ingolstadt, I suggest the Schloss.
