3 full Days Frankfurt to Düsseldorf

I fly into Frankfurt midday on Friday and then on Monday evening I fly out of Düsseldorf Airport. I'm wondering how to spend my time.
I was thinking of skipping Frankfurt and heading straight to Mainz.

I'm interested in going to Luxembourg and have heard good reports of Trier and Monschau. I suppose Cologne, Bonn, or Düsseldorf will also be worth my time.
I'll be traveling alone so I'm able to see multiple places in a day and I don't really like to pay to go in many attractions.
Suggestions, bitte?

Traveling by train? Is this like tomorrow? There is a lot to see between Mainz and Duesseldorf without going way out of the way to Luxembourg. Only 3 nights is not much time.

Public trans, yes! Saw there's a direct train to Mainz. I'll either take trains or something like flixbus.

Luxembourg is mostly because I try to see a new country each year and I've never been there (and I'm not sure when I'll be able to see a new one before my next birthday! 🙃).

With a short time, Monschau would need a car. You could definitely spend a night in Luxembourg city. the trains from Koblenz to Luxembourg every hour taking about 2 1/2 hours and have stops in Trier and Cochem. You could travel all day on a Rhineland Pfalz ticket, paying the extra fare from Trier to Luxembourg. That would still be a whirlwind day on Saturday, Sunday travel back to Cologne, and several interesting spots in the city. Take a walk on the Hohenzollern Bridge toward the other side of the Rhine. Its the railway bridge coming out of the hauptbahnhof and take a gander at all the "love locks". Romanticism or vandalism, you decide. Stop in to Papa Joes Biersalon in the Alter Markt. You can get a train direct to Duesseldorf airport from Cologne in about 40 minutes.

Edit: Friday is an RMV local ticket from the airport to Mainz.
Saturday you can travel all day on a Rheinland-Pfalz ticket, hop-on hop off as you like on regional trains (no IC, ICE, or EC trains) as far as Igel, which is the last station in Germany on the way to Luxembourg. Cost is 24 EUR. Buy a separate ticket for Igel to Luxembourg for 16.20 EUR in Trier and have it in hand when you cross the border into Luxembourg and you don't have to get off the train to buy another ticket.
Sunday: Unless you want to stop of some where on the way to Cologne, just buy a regular ticket for 52.30 EUR.
Monday is an RSV local ticket to get to Duesseldorf airport.
