3 days Munich - Austria

Hi and yes I know three days isn't enough time - but this is a pre trip before Greece. So we fly into Munich on June 15 am - planning to head to Austria - husband and I will rent a car. We will be in Munich on June 18 to fly to Greece on the 19th - so just three nights to plan and travel on this leg of the trip. My husband found either a place in Mariastein or Leiten or Salzburg.... I fell in love with the information on Hallstat but I am unsure if it is worthwhile to try to get there - spend a night - and then run back - Not sure the best use of our limited time - thoughts ?

Hallstat is absolutely beautiful, and for some lucky reason we were there on a day in 2019 when it wasn't overrun with crowds. (And there are normally crowds all day, every day.) I have read that there are plenty of other lakes just as gorgeous and not so crowded. (Search this forum, as I know it's been discussed.) But, if your heart is absolutely set on going, you must arrive early to enjoy the full day there, and then spend the night and then head back the next day. We had one full day and spent one night there, and it was enough time to take the boat cruise, salt mine tour, stroll around the lovely town and be on our way the next morning. Plan ahead and book tickets ahead if possible.

Are you trying to squeeze it in on an already tight 3 night schedule. Maybe? I would only stay in Salzburg (not Mariastein or Leiten) if you are going to stay one night in Hallstatt. You are already doing plenty of driving to/from Munich. (And possibly to/from Hallstat.)
