3 Days in the Black Forest

My husband, myself and our two children (ages 7 & 14) would like to take a 3 Day Holiday in the Black Forest. We would be driving from our home in the Veneto region of Italy. Our desire is to spend most of our time relaxing in nature, visit an authentic cuckoo clock museum/shop, spend part of one day wandering a quaint town and my daughter insists on having the a delicious piece of Black Forest Cake. ;) We would prefer to stay out of town (but close enough drive to eat, get necessities) and maybe in or near a forest.

My question is where would you recommend us staying? What area? Or even a particular bed & breakfast, hotel, vacation rental?

What itinerary would you recommend?

I'm just beginning my research so your information is much appreciated!

Last November, we found the original Black Forest Cake made famous by Joseph Keller at the Cafe Schaefer in Triberg where he concocted it ! Delicious !

Thank you, Carla! Triberg looks like a good area to stay and/or visit so since we are there might as well eat cake! Thank you for the recommendation!

We stayed in Gengenbach and visited Triberg. I second the Triberg suggestion. There are some waterfalls and hiking trails for outdoor activities, a wonderful cuckoo clock shop (as I believe the cuckoo clock was invented in Triberg). Had I known about BF cake being invented there I would have found that too :)

The kids - and you too - might enjoy the 'hochseilgarten' - ( ropes course ) in Triberg. You should consider a 'bauernhof' - farm stay. Bavaria Ben's website lists several . www.bensbauernhof.com. The Rotbauernhof is one of his favorites ( shown on his first page ) that is right next to the sommerrodelbahn ( lots of fun ) and the Voghtsbauernhof open air museum.
