3 days in munich in June 2019

Places that I am keen in Munich. Please advise me on which I should head for. And how I should go about planning. As my planning is not so good. Which day tour is more worth to join? Impossible to join all day tour. Just spend 3 days in Munich.
1. Marienplatz
2. Salzburg ( join small group tour?)
3. Konigssee
4. Romantic road, Rothenburg, and Harburg Day tour
( Rothenburg-on-der-Tauber)
5. Markets- Munich’s Viktualienmarkt
6. Ingolstadt village shopping ( Otto-Hahn- StraBe, 85055 Ingolstadt, Germany
7. Neuschwanstein castle day trip
8. Fc Bayern Munchen Football and Allianz arena tour

With only 3 days, you are going to have to prioritize your wish list. I'd say take only one out of town day trip. The Vikulienmarkt is easily visited in the morning, and the Marienplatz is a short walk away.

I think your best options are a choice between Neuschwanstein and Salzburg. Can be done using a Bayern Ticket for 31 EUR for 2 (I am assuming there are 2 of you).

Your other threads indicates an interest in shopping and that you are going to Berlin for the second half of this short trip. Ingolstadt is on the way to Berlin, so you could stop at the Designer Outlet Village on your way. Buy several months in advance Sparpreis tickets from Munich to Berlin, specifying a 5 to 7 hour stopover at Ingolstadt Hbf. You can store your luggage in lockers at the station, then take a bus or taxi to the shopping village, return in time to get the continuation of the journey to Berlin. You will have to change trains in Nuremberg, then it is direct to Berlin. Looks like you can buy tickets for a slow as 30 EUR per person.

Can I ask, is it on the way if after 3 days in Munich, I head to Stuttgart for a day ( is it necessary to spend a night there ) then head up to Berlin? ( train ride abt 2hr 15 mins from Munich)
Cos my husband wanted to visit the Amg factory tour.
For stay in Munich , any hotel to recommend? Am currently thinking of motel one sendling Tor.

Well, if you are going to Stuttgart for a day, forget that idea.
Are you a Mercedes-AMG owner? Are you referring to the factory in Affalterbach? I believe you need to set up a time with your local dealer. Coming from Munich it will take at least 3 hours to get there, so you will need an afternoon tour, and they recommend 2 hours. After that, it will be difficult to get to Berlin before 23:00.

You can get there by taking a train to Stuttgart, then a train to Marbach am Neckar, then a bus to Affalterbach, but then it is almost 1 km walk to the factory. So here is my proposal.

Go the night before to Ludwigsburg, north of Stuttgart and get a hotel there. In the morning, Dear Husband can take a taxi about 12 km to the AMG factory and have a morning factory tour booked. If motors are not your particular interest, visit the beautiful Residenzschloss Ludwigsburg. When he gets back after the tour, you can then get a train to Berlin.

Yes, he owns a Mercedes Amg car. He always wanted to visit AMG plant in Affalterbach. So I think we will go there . Will contact them for the tour.
I am thinking that cos we have our luggage with us, so maybe it better to travel there the night before as u said, and stayed there . Next morning, then we take a taxi to the factory. After the tour then we catch the train to Berlin.
Can you recommend a hotel for us to stay for a night there? Thank you!

Do you have a list of must do's in Berlin? Otherwise, I am thinking you should skip it and concentrate on Munich to Frankfurt region. Singapore Air/Lufthansa have nonstop flights to these cities.

That will give you more time to do some of the Munich things, visit the AMG factory, visit Rothenburg, which is between Munich and Frankfurt, take a day cruise on the Rhine river to see the castles. With only 6 days, it is not much time, and you cannot achieve a lot on your first day. The airplane ride is 12 1/2 hours and and there is a 6 hour time difference.

PS Motel One at Sendlinger Tor Munich is fine. You'll have to look at booking.com for Ludwigsburg.

Hi Sam
Just to ensure I got your advise right. Instead of staying one more night at Munich, I should head to Ludwigsburg, north of Stuttgart and get a hotel there. And get to the factory the next day?

It is certainly an option to fly back from Frankfurt. Have you purchased airline tickets yet?
Ludwigsburg is 1 3/4 hour to Frankfurt airport, but 3 1/2 hours to Munich airport. Rothenburg is 3 hours from Frankfurt airport, but 4 hours from Munich airport.

Seems like you could have 6 or 7 nights in Germany, 4 nights in Munich, 1 or 2 nights in Rothenburg and 1 or 2 nights in Ludwigsburg. That might get most of your items covered. But it is your vacation, so you need to cover what you can. Just saying, if there is nothing in Berlin that is important to you, it is a big detour and means you need a connecting flight to get home.

Thank you , Sam. Am I still be able to slot in Ingolstadt in my trip. Will do so by flying out from Frankfurt if that is better. Initially tot that their is a fair in Berlin , that why I wanted to go. Plus the kawade. If I do away that, where else can you recommend? Need to do some shopping.

You say you can spare one week for this trip. Does it need to be a calendar week? Example, leave on a Friday night and be home by the following Sunday.

The Carnival of Cultures goes over a weekend from Thursday June 7 to Monday June 10, with Sunday being the big day with parade and goes until midnight.

I am not much of a shopper. KaDeWe is owned by Karstadt, which also has stores in Munich, but I do understand that KaDeWe is a rather iconic store.

A shame cannot take at least a couple more days for this trip.

Too many places that we want to go buy too little time . Not necessarily to be a calendar week.
Even the Salzburg tat I read about, the salt mine tour ( Halllien) is also worth a visit.
Look like I need to read up some more before making up my mind on, after Munich, where to go next. Just scare that the hotel will be booked up soon.

I would suggest dropping Rothenburg ob der Tauber. FC Bayern arena tour would be interesting. They are a very good team, even though I am no fan of them.

There is also the subway (S-Bahn), in addition to the train, that goes from Stuttgart Hbf to Marbach am Neckar, which houses the museum of one of Germany's greatest literary figures.

It is very unlikely that any hotels will be booked for June 2019 in the near future. So I will give a stab at a sample itinerary.

Friday June 7 to Saturday June 8: Fly Singapore to Berlin, via Munich. Arrive Berlin Tegel at 9:05 on Saturday morning. Get a hotel in the Zoologischer Bahnhof. If you like Motel One, there is on right there as well as many other hotels. You can get a bus from Tegel to Zoo-Bahnhof. This is one U-Bahn stop from Wittenbergplatz where the KaDeWe store is located. It is also walking distance to the Kurfuerstendamm, the famous shopping street. With one connection on the U-Bahn to Mehringdamm where the Festiavl of Cultures will be held. Arriving early, you may not be able to get into your hotel room, but they will hold your luggage until the afternoon when your room will be ready.

Sunday June 9: Go to the Festival of Cultures.

Monday June 10: Train to Ludwigsburg. Take the S-Bahn or regional train to Berlin Hauptbahnhof, then train to Stuttgart, then train to Ludwigsburg. Hotel in Ludwigsburg.

Tuesday June 11: Morning taxi to Affalterbach for AMG factory tour. Return at noon by taxi, then train to Munich. Check in to hotel (Motel One Sendlinger Tor).

Wednesday June 12 to Saturday June 15: In Munich to do what you can. Shopping day trip to Ingolstadt Village by bus. Day trip to Salzburg by train. Sights in Munich.

Saturday June 15: S-Bahn to Munich airport and flight to Singapore, arriving Sunday June 16 in the morning.

So that is my idea how to accomplish your hit list in the limited amount of time you have, Switch it around as you wish or see fit, change the dates, keeping in mind of the festival dates in Berlin.

Note, Monday June 10 is a holiday in Germany, Whit Monday.

I would just say that with 3 full days (if that's truly full days) you need one full day in Munich, which will take care of items 1,5,8. The other two days can be day tours but you'll have to prioritize which ones, you obviously can't do them all.

Hi Sam, a bit late for me to see your latest advice for me. I have just booked my flight.
Depart Sin on 6/6, arrive Munich in the morning 6:55am. Have booked sendling Tor motel one. Will head to hotel and deposit luggage.
*I need advise on how to reach the hotel from the airport.
Day01- visit viktualienmart, Marienplatz & the new town hall and Hofbrauhaus.
Day02- join the Neuschwanstein or Salzburg day tour
*which is more worth doing? Saw some review that if the weather isn’t good, the view @ Neuschwanstein will be affected?
Day03- ingolstadt village shopping and then head to Berlin on 8/6. Check in to hotel ( haven decide where to stay yet, but preferably near kadewe.) explore neighbourhood.
Day04- Carnival of Cultures ( Sunday parade day)
* any idea where it is held? Time? ( duration) How to go there? What to expect? ( we do not want to miss this!)
Day 05- it a public holiday 10/6. Are the shops open? We want to explore the shopping, galleries Lafayette, flea market, kadewe boulevard. If not, what can we do on a public holiday? Is day tour available?

Haven plan anything after that yet. My flight back to Sin from Munich international airport on 14/6 13:10pm.

I came across this : Nuremberg . Can reach by train .( worth exploring?

*I need advise on how to reach the hotel from the airport.

Buy a Airport-City ticket at the airport and take any S-Bahn (i.e., S1 or S8) to the Hauptbahnhof (main station). Transfer to either U1 (destination Mangfallplatz) or U2 (destination Messestadt Ost) and exit at "Sendlinger Tor" (first stop). The ticket is good for public transport for the rest of the day.

Day02- join the Neuschwanstein or Salzburg day tour *which is more worth doing?

Salzburg, indisputably.

BTW - day 3: please note that there are only two direct buses to Ingolstadt Village from Munich. But you could take the train to Ingolstadt Nord and there transfer to bus #20 (or take a taxi from Ingolstadt Hbf (!)).

Day 05- it a public holiday 10/6. Are the shops open?

Sorry, no. But you certainly will not die of boredom. Get an event calendar at the tourist office in the central station.

On the public holiday, the shops are closed the whole day? How about restaurant/ cafe? So the whole street will be quiet, I Guess. People will be staying home. How can I make this day useful? Do not want to waste a day !

No, restaurant/cafes will be open. One of the reasons the the Carnival of Cultures is held when it is is because it is a German holiday weekend and more people can attend.

One of the issues I have been thinking about is that if this is indeed a shopping trip, you will gradually accumulate goods that will become burdensome as you travel. I would recommend bringing only carry-on type bags. You should be able to get a weeks worth of clothing in each. Then, as needed, you can buy a large roller suitcase with which you can carry the goods. So just keep in mind, everything you buy, you will have to carry for the rest of the trip.

As far as your itinerary, you arrive 6:55 Thursday morning June 6. As was recommended, buy an all-network group day pass for 24.30 EUR. That not only covers your transportation from the airport to your hotel, plus free use of the Munich transportation for the rest of the day, until 6 am the next day actually. You will probably not be able to get into your room that early, but the hotel will hold your luggage until your room is ready in the afternoon. So now you can visit the Viktulienmarkt and Marienplatz. You can walk, or take the trams which are above ground and you can sight see as you go. Be in the Marienplatz at 11:00 or 12:00 to watch the Rathaus Glockenspiel show.

Friday June 7, day trip as you wish.

Saturday, June 8, Here I am of 2 minds, 1) As suggested go buy train in the morning, store luggage at Ingolstadt Hbf, bus/taxi to Ingolstadt Village, shop, return to Ingolstadt Hbf and continue to Berlin, changing trains in Nuremberg on the way. 2) Take the bus in the morning from Munich Hbf direct to Ingolstadt Village, shop, then return on the early afternoon and stay in your Munich hotel that night. This makes logistics a bit easier.

Sunday June 9, If you went with plan 2 above, take an early train to Berlin. First train is at 6:55 and will get you to Berlin just before noon. Check in to your hotel and then take U-Bahn to the Carnival of Cultures parade in the Kreuzberg neighborhood

Monday June 10, Can not reliably plan any shopping today. Tour around Berlin and see the sights using a day pass. You can even go back to the Carnival of Cultures, as it continues until 19:00.

Tuesday June 11, Shop till you drop.

Wednesday June 12, Take train to Ludwigsburg. It will take about 6 hours.

Thursday June 13, Taxi to Affalterbach and AMG factory tour. Afternoon return to Ludwigsburg. If of interest, tour the Residenzschloss, then train to Munich for you last night.

Friday June 14, To the airport and fly home.

For train travel in Germany, you can get German Rail Pass Twin 3-day, 2nd class for 292 EUR. That will cover both of you for Munich to Berlin, Berlin to Ludwigsburg, and Ludwigsburg to Munich. You might also get a 4-day pass instead for 314 EUR and use the 4th day for a day trip to Neauschwanstein or Salzburg.

Just wanted to add that most stores (grocery, clothes) will be closed on Sundays as well as holidays, it’s the law. The only exceptions we saw were at the airport/train station, and souvenir shops in very touristy areas (Rothenburg). Don’t count on clothes shopping on a Sunday.

After discussion with my husband, we decided not to visit the AMG factory this trip. Where else should we go? We prefer some romantic sightseeing. Any recommendations?

Rothenburg ob der Tauber fits the bill. 5 1/2 hour train trip from Berlin and just a short side trip off the direct line between Berlin and Munich. Yes, it gets criticized for being touristy, but that is because tourists like it and has tourist infrastructure, lots of hotels, a variety of restaurants, and things to see and do (and buy). The famous Nightwatchman Tour in the evening is a highlight for many. Walk on the city wall. It is about 4 to 4 1/2 hours to Munich airport.
