24 Hrs in Frankfurt

I'll be spending 24 hours mid September in Frankfurt on my way to Barcelona. Im a solo female traveler in my 30s, Looking for recommendations and some questions since I've never been:
1) Hotel vs hostel vs airbnb? What area would you recommend staying in? Ideally easy access to the airport
2) What would you go see in 24 hours? I'll be arriving at 1:30pm and out 4pm following day. I enjoy walking around exploring neighborhoods, architecture, local markets or shops. Im not big into museums unless its a must see.
3) Is it fairly safe?
4) Is eating gluten free challenging?

Thanks

I stayed at the Ibis Centrum. It's an easy walk from the train station, on the river. The historic center is pretty with several places worth seeing. You can walk or take the tram. Yes, it's safe. There are frequent trains that make the short trip to the airport.

I hear from people all the time about how beautiful they think Frankfurt is. Especially in the early evenings along the river, with sunset and the markets that are in the city. Or when the lights come on. Come visit me Mark and let me show you around. :-)

This is what is happening in Sept. in Frankfurt.
* 28 Aug. - 6 Sept. Rheingauer Wine Fest, Frankfurt Fressgasse
* 6-15 Sept. Autumn Dippemess, Frankfurt
* 7 Sept. Bruckenwall Fest, Frankfurt Sachsenhausen Wallstrasse
* 8 Sept. Day of the Open Monument, all of Germany
* 9 Sept. Newcomers Fest, Frankfurt Römer
* 19-21 Sept. Harvest Fest, Frankfurt Hauptwache & Roßmarkt

Last September we too stayed a the Ibis Centrum. It is an easy walk from the train station (hence easy connection to the airport) and also close to the river. There is a very nice promenade along the river and it's about a mile walk to the Altstadt and the cathedral where you will see about the only historically interesting architecture in Frankfurt. Frankfurt was pretty much flattened during the war and they decided to rebuild in modern design unlike Munich where they opted to do a lot of restoration and traditional construction. Thus Frankfurt's nick-name, Manhattan on the Main. The Romerberg in the Altstadt is interesting to see but it actually a recent accurate reconstruction of the 16th century market square and we found the area around there interesting to walk around. (Locals have mixed feelings about the Romerberg but it's still interesting to see)

As far as we could tell, the Frankfurt is quite safe, the riverfront promenade is both very open and has a lot of pedestrian traffic. As for gluten free, I can remember seeing a number of places that had gluten free items on the menu but I can't be specific. If you ask at the hotel desk, I imagine they could help you out.

Have a good stay.

Markk , Many thanks , we will absolutely see it . Frankly , it appears more cohesive and better designed than his work in Vienna . The Russian Orthodox church is also at the top of the list . Going234 , That also looks interesting , with six days in Frankfurt , it should fit in nicely .

MarkK- thanks. Someone else on another travel forum also recommended Mainz. I think I will go with that.
Do i purchase train tickets in advance or at the airport? What is the name of the stations (Im looking at the RMV website you linked and dont know which to select from Frankfurt Airport to Mainz)?

That part is true...Frankfurt seen from the river Main at that time of the day, I've seen it, the last time in 1987.

In Frankfurt I stay in a small but nice and cheaper hotel close the Poststrasse exit if you want to access it above ground. Using the underground passage is even more convenient. Yes, it is safe...bottom line.
