24 hours in Freiburg in June

Hi everyone - My family and I will be in Freiburg for a short 24 hours in June on our way to Switzerland. Since we will be with our 1 year old, we are looking to really prioritize our time there to the must-see recommendations we get from people who have been there. So...what do you recommend? Any hotels you would recommend? Restaurants? Activities? We would love to see the Black Forest if there is time. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.
Erika

Hi Erika,
Walk the altstadt (old city). You could start at Munsterplatz where the cathedral is. If you get lucky and its a market day you can browse the outdoor market on Munsterplatz.
Your 1 year old might enjoy the bächle (little waterways). Some stores sell little wooden boats for kids to use in the water. In general German toys are really great if you'd like a souvenir for your little one.
Summer is a perfect time to visit a beer garden. Feierling Brewery and Kastaniengarten both have beautiful outdoor seating. Kastanienberg has an excellent view from a large hilltop over the city. Martin's Brau is an example of a typical German Brauhaus with delicious food (but no outdoor seating). In the afternoon you can visit a konditorei for coffee and cake. Cafe Schmidt and Kolben cafe are favorites with elegant treats. Hope you love your time there!

On the edge of the altstadt is a large hill with an observation tower, it may be the 'Kastanienberg' Christine is referring to. It was closed to the public when we were there a couple of years ago. However, if you are looking for wooded walks, there are plenty of pleasant trails around this point heading east.

If you are staying overnight you may be entitled to the Konus card for a day, with the benefit of free train rides through the forest (not sure on this). Staufen is a beautiful village to the south. However, with only one day, Freiburg on it's own should be enough.
