22 days.. And counting.

I set up a countdown on my phone to remind me how long till My wife and I leave... Not so sure that was a great idea... haha. So most of the stress work is done, Flight booked, Rooms booked, Car paid for. Heck, I actually have my bag partially packed.

My wife and I will be flying into Frankfurt and jumping on a train to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Staying there for a couple days then jumping on another train for a quick stop in Ulm then on to Munich for a couple more days. After that, it's pick up a car and drive to Grainau for a night then early morning to cruise the German Alps and see the Castles. From there we drive along the southern part of Germany along Lake Constance and onward to the Black Forest staying in Triberg for a few days enjoying that area of forest and cuckoo clocks. We will then drive north out of the forest and along the river all the way up to St Goar. Next day we head to Cologne for the Cathedral and to return the car. After that, it's a train ride back to St Goar and one last night in Germany before we head back to Frankfurt for our flight home.

This has been a 1 full year or more of planning and research. It has changed more times than I can count and actually started out as a two country trip that was WAY too overzealous.

The Information here in the thread has been great and Rick's staff seems to keep me moving in the right direction. When It all seemed too much I would just watch Rick as he was exploring and it seemed to give me a nice boost of renewed energy to push through and not get overwhelmed.

Thank you,

P.S This is the conversation I had with my wife about a rental car.

Wife: What kind of rental car will we be driving?
Me: Something fun with no top and only has two seats.... :)

I can't wait.

I know the feeling!!! 20 days for us - then 3 months traveling! I am about ready to explode!

We love Ulm - have you been before? Be sure to eat at Herrenkeller - yummy.

Have a great trip!

first time in Germany for us...
We actually are looking for a place to eat while we are in Ulm so that I will definitely be looking into that place. My wife mentioned something about the fisherman's quarter is it near there?

Yes - the whole area is walkable - about a 10 minute walk from the restaurant down to the river via Fischergasse. The munster is very cool - it has the tallest steeple in the world.

Hi,

As pointed above on Ulm, be sure to see the das Ulmer Dom, which is in terms of cathedrals in Germany is one of the largest, depending if it is measured by height or breadth. Lots of construction going on around Ulm Hbf currently. I was there last month en route to areas south of Stuttgart.

Ulmer Dom is the main reason we are stopping... My wife has a thing for old churches and large Cathedrals.

Hi,

A thing for old churches and cathedrals so do I in some ways. Then, in that case, there are lots to see in Germany... it is das Ulmer Münster, not "Dom"....sorry; also der Wormser Dom, der Speyerer Dom, der Naumburger Dom, der Magdeburger Dom, der Erfurter Dom, der Mainzer Dom, and obviously, der Kölner Dom.

I don't see the possibility in this itinerary but the next trip! See the Johanniskirche in Lüneburg, close to Hamburg.
