2 Families w/ kids - Germany w/ Euro '24 match - itinerary suggestions welcomed

We'll be two families w/ kids (10/10/13/15) and looking for suggestions. Have traveled to Europe before, my wife and I really liked Salzburg & Alps. Group seems to prefer smaller cities (but tough to ignore Munich). We'd attend ONE Euro '24 match within our June 30 - July 7 timeframe - dates/cities below.

• Other interests are
○ shorter interesting/entertaining historical tours/sites (thanks kids)
○ Hiking, cycling, outdoors stuff
○ Food & beer/wine - Bamberg is on my bucket list but unlikely for this trip
○ Spa/resort hotel - really enjoyed staying at one as adults outside Salzburg, would enjoy finding something similar but kid friendly. Okay that nice ones can be pricey.
○ I've been to Munich & alps and really enjoyed it - would go again, but curious if our crew should target Stuttgart/Black Forest towns or Frankfurt/Rhine area. I don't want to be partial since I'm more familiar with that area. I currently think Munich then Berchtesgaden area as a base makes the most sense, but feel free to talk me out of it.

I feel like some of you have interesting suggestions that I might not be able to easily find!

Match dates - only ONE of these
• July 1
○ Dusseldorf
○ Frankfurt
• July 2
○ Munich
• July 5
○ Stuttgart
• July 6
Dusseldorf

The kids would enjoy the Night Watchman tour in Rothenburg ob de Tauber and the Crime & Punishment Museum there.

I second Rothenburg o.d.T. We visited when my kids were 12 & 14, it was a highlight for them.

Given that you're hoping to attend a Euro match, I would suggest home-basing near Frankfurt and Stuttgart so you could easily jet over to those games if you manage to get tickets. My family and I have tickets to the semi-final in Munich on July 9, and we're hoping to get tickets for the July 5 game in Stuttgart. There have already been two phases of ticket lotteries, so most tickets are already allocated. But a resale platform is opening in March. You may also be able to get tickets closer to the game day, but it means you need to be in the area. Be aware that many accommodations are already heavily booked. I booked mine in November & had a difficult time (but I am picky!).

My teens have similar traveling interests to your kids, so for this trip we're heading to Cochem on the Mosel River. We can rent bikes and ride the path along the river to castles, wine cellars, etc. In Stuttgart, I'm hoping to book a tour at the Porsche factory (they are currently completely booked through June, and have yet to release July bookings). We did the BMW factory tour a few years ago, which was a hit. Wherever you end up, you should look for a sommerrodelbahn (coaster) - so much fun!

Cheers,
Liesl

Do you have tickets already? They have all been allocated now. I’m sure there will be resale tickets available somewhere but these are not always legal so just be careful.

If they operate fan parks for this tournament then it is fun to be in the city anyway and just watch the match on the big screens that get put up. Germany did this really well when they hosted the World Cup but they can be difficult to police so it doesn’t always happen.

Thank you all for the detailed suggestions. And after these awesome suggestions we've decided to . . . go to Munich then the Berchtesgaden/Salzburg area :)

We'll have a couple of teens in the group - so I'll always take suggestions on how to entertain those characters in Munich. I have contacted a group about a food tour (hopefully a beer + food tour that focuses the "food" part on pastries and desserts and chocolate, and we'll likely go on a Mike's bike tour as we've done that before and it was excellent.

Look at staying in vacation apartments ( ferienwohnung ). Much cheaper than the 4 hotel rooms you might need. More space.

For Munich your teens would probably like to watch the surfing wave in the English Garden and get to float down the creek that runs through it. Mine enjoyed this when we visited (14 and 10 at the time). They also LOVED the giant water park outside the city (we did it the final night before we flew). One also got a big kick out of just e-scootering around the city.

Happy to offer Berchtesgaden suggestions too but since you didn’t ask I figured you may have that one planned out.
