2 days: Munich or Fussen?

Hi! I am going to Germany and Austria on an upcoming trips. I have days planned to do the romantic road before jumping to Vienna and spending time there. However, I have one 'flex' day that I could either choose to do an additional day in Fussen or an additional day in Munich.

Right now, I have 1 day in Fussen, and 2 in Munich. One of the Munich days I am planning on doing a Dachau tour, so it won't be spent in the city.

Let me know your thoughts. I am having a difficult time deciding.

How shall somebody give a reasonable advice without knowing your interests?

Are those the number of days or nights? I always count nights. One night gives you part of a day, 2 nights give you a full day, etc. There is a lot more to see in Munich than Fussen, but I guess it depends on what you like to do.

I have never spent time in Munich, but loved Fussen.. They have an interesting local museum and I enjoyed walking around this small town.
EDITED: I'm also not a fan of the castle(unless you're an opera fan). But if my daughter hadn't wanted to see the castle, I would never have gone to Fussen so the castle was worth it to stay in Fussen.

Fũssen is a nice enough town but it’s primarily about the castles. So… more castles or an extra day in Munich which gives you art museums, English Gardens/surfing, etc. I do absolutely think you’re wise not to plan other ticketed stuff the same day as Dachau. It’s just really heavy emotional lifting and you may want to visit an art museum or the park afterwards.

It’s your call. If it was me, I’d skip Füssen entirely and add that time elsewhere. I am not a big fan of Neuschwanstein; especially as a stand alone. If you do go, be sure to also visit Hohenschwangau as a counterpoint.

I’m with cala. We’ve been to Germany (Bavaria) over a dozen times and have spent a single night in Munich (that was more than enough for us) yet 6 nights in Fuessen in total.

One of the Munich days I am planning on doing a Dachau tour, so it
won't be spent in the city.

Dachau is a separate municipality, but it is just outside the Munich city limits. I would hardly say that your day won't be spent in the city. You should be able to get back in the city center (Hbf, Marienplatz) by mid-afternoon.

BTW, I hope you mean you are touring Dachau that day, not taking a cost added, third party tour. It's really easy to get to the Memorial on your own, and it costs a lot less than the tours. I took the 2½ hour tour given by the Memorial (4,-€), and I thought that tour was excellent. Our guide told us more about Dachau than I could ever remember.

You buy an MVV M,1 Day-ticket (10,50€ single, 19,20€ 2-5 people). That ticket covers all of your transportation (S/U-bahn, trams, or buses) on the Munich Metro all day long, including round trip by S-Bahn and bus to the Memorial. Leave from any S-Bahn station ( Ostbahnhof, Rosenheimerplatz, Isartor, Marienplatz, Stachus, or the Hbf) on the trunk line through Munich. You don't have to go to some meeting point and wait.

Take the S2 to Dachau Bahnhof, about 25-30 minutes depending on where you board it. The S2 runs four times an hour, 10 or 20 minutes apart. At Dachau Bahnhof you take bus 726 (it's well marked). It runs every 10 minutes and takes 7 minutes to get to the Memorial.

Admission to the Memorial is free. The excellent tour offered by the Memorial cost 4€ and takes about 2½ hours, or you can rent an audio guide and do it at your own pace. There is also a free half hour film about the Memorial given in English multiple times a day. Check the website for times.

If you get to the Memorial early enough, you'll get back into downtown Munich in time to do some sightseeing and have dinner. And that day-ticket is valid for any other transit in Munich the rest of the day.

There are some beautiful sites to see in Fussen, but I would rather have an extra day in Munich than an extra day in Fussen. However if an extra day in Fussen affords you the option to visit Linderhof Palace, then I would strongly consider that. Linderhof is quite small but quite beautiful. Linderhof is a 40km drive from Fussen. You can't choose poorly on this matter though. Good luck!
