2 days in Munich

Shall have 2 days at Munich on 27Sep bfr heading to Frankfurt. 1st time in Germany. 1st day, booked day trip to Salzburg. Where is worth to go next day? Dont mind 1-2 hour rail travel to famous sight seeing place.

Need some advice.

Thank you very much.

I'd just stay in Munich. There are tons of sights you can walk to right in the central area.

The Munich self-guided walk in Rick Steves' Germany guidebook is excellent. If you're in a hurry, you can hit the highlights in a couple of hours. Or, with even a modicum of interest and curiosity, it can take a couple of days.

Munich has much to offer within easy walking distance of the historic center; and even more if you buy a day ticket for the inner rings of the MVV public transit system.

I just came back from nine days in Munich (photos here), and even then feel like I've just scratched the surface.

Jeff your photos are beautiful! I will be going to Munich in december and they have been so helpful in "seeing" the places I am planning on visiting. Thanks for posting them. I am curious about your experience at Therme-Erding. I am planning on going as well-my daughter will celebrate her birthday while we are there and I thought it would be a perfect way to spend part of her day.

There are several walking tours and bike tours offered in Munich for about 12 euro. Since you only have 1 day to spend there, this is the most efficient way to not only see Munich, but to learn something about the history of what you are looking at. If you have a Rick Steves guidebook, you can check his recommendations, you can look on Trip Advisor for listings, check their websites and read their up to date reviews, or you could also do a Search on this forum too to see who has gone on tours there and which companies they recommend.

Therme Erding is amazing. I spent five hours there on my last full day in Germany, recharging physically and mentally for the trip home. It's a great place to relax and unwind. English-language website is here.

(Note that the "Sauna-Paradies" section of the facility is for age 16 and up only. Swimwear is not allowed in this area, though everyone covers up with towel or robe unless actually in the pool or sauna. There is only one (huge) coed locker room. But this is Germany, where it's no big deal and there is no hint of any impropriety.)

Take the S-2 to the Altenerding stop (not Erding, which is the end of the line). From there it's about a 3/4 mile walk on a paved path, through a construction site, to the side of the Therme Erding complex. Or take a bus from the S-Bahn station to the Therme.

There is an affiliated, similar but smaller facility at Bad Wörishofen.

Thank you for all the replies.

Jeff, your pictures are beautiful. What camera did you use? I shall use a Sony NEX-5R.

For the free day, I will likely join Mike's bike tour for a 4-hour classic city tour. There is 1 hour lunch at beer garden and several stops, so actual biking time should be around 2 hours which will be fine to me and my wife.

Hope to receive more replies from others soon.

Thanks for the kind words. I used a Canon PowerShot S120, and a GoPro Hero 2 for extreme wide-angle shots.

Video done with the same two cameras is here. The S120 takes nice 1080p HD video. It also has a nifty "Hybrid" setting that records a four-second 720p video clip whenever you take a still photo. The YouTube video combines some of those four-second clips with some 1080p footage, and some from the GoPro as well.

I just looked at an ad for the Sony NEX-5R. That looks like a nice little machine! Please post a link to your photos when you get back.
